The clearest way to understand ACT scoring is to walk through the Composite calculation and its SAT concordance together, for a few different score profiles. These four examples use the same math and the official 2018 concordance table behind the ACT score calculator.
Example 1 — Enhanced ACT, Rounds Down
Section scores: English 28, Math 31, Reading 29
Composite = (28 + 31 + 29) ÷ 3 = 88 ÷ 3 = 29.33 → rounds down to 29SAT Concordance: ACT 29 concords to SAT 1340, comparable range 1330-1350.
Example 2 — Enhanced ACT, Exact Whole Number
Section scores: English 33, Math 35, Reading 34
Composite = (33 + 35 + 34) ÷ 3 = 102 ÷ 3 = 34.0 → stays 34SAT Concordance: ACT 34 concords to SAT 1500, comparable range 1490-1520.
No rounding ambiguity here — the raw average lands exactly on a whole number.
Example 3 — Legacy ACT, Rounds Up at Exactly .5
Section scores: English 22, Math 25, Reading 23, Science 20
Composite = (22 + 25 + 23 + 20) ÷ 4 = 90 ÷ 4 = 22.5 → rounds up to 23This demonstrates ACT’s specific “round half up” rule directly — a raw average of exactly 22.5 becomes 23, not 22, matching the same rounding convention used in Enhanced vs Legacy ACT explained.
SAT Concordance: ACT 23 concords to SAT 1140, comparable range 1130-1150.
Example 4 — Enhanced ACT With Optional Science (STEM Score)
Section scores: English 18, Math 20, Reading 19, Science (optional) 21
Composite = (18 + 20 + 19) ÷ 3 = 57 ÷ 3 = 19.0 → stays 19
STEM Score = (20 + 21) ÷ 2 = 20.5 → reported as 20.5 (STEM Score is not rounded the same way as Composite)SAT Concordance: ACT 19 concords to SAT 1010, comparable range 990-1020.
Note that Science (21) doesn’t affect the 19 Composite at all under the Enhanced format — it only shows up in the separate STEM Score, exactly as described in the ACT terminology glossary.
