Most AP students aren’t taking one exam in isolation — they’re juggling three, four, or five AP courses at once, with limited hours to review before test day. This guide walks through how to divide that time sensibly, using each subject’s historical curve as one input alongside your current preparedness and your actual credit goals.
Step 1 — List Your Exams and Your Current Standing
Before touching a study schedule, get honest about where you stand in each class right now: your current grade, how you scored on the most recent unit test or practice exam, and how comfortable you feel with the material. A subject where you’re already strong needs less new study time than one where you’re struggling, regardless of how forgiving that exam’s curve is.
Step 2 — Check How Forgiving Each Exam’s Curve Is
Not all AP exams require the same composite percentage for a given score. Historically, some subjects have noticeably more generous curves than others:

Ten more percentage points of composite mastery might move you from a 4 to a 5 on AP Calculus BC, but only close part of the gap on AP Chemistry, where the top band is narrower relative to the score below it. A curve being generous doesn’t mean the content is easy — AP Calculus BC is still a demanding course. It means that historically, a slightly lower share of total composite points has been enough to reach each score band on that specific exam.
Step 3 — Weigh Curve Leniency Against Your Actual Goal
Curve leniency should not be your only factor. Combine it with what you actually need:
- If you need a specific score for college credit, check your target school’s policy first (see AP credit score thresholds by university). A subject with a strict curve but a low credit requirement (a 3) may need less marginal effort than a subject with a generous curve but a high credit requirement (a 5 at a school like Harvard).
- If your goal is transcript strength for admissions rather than credit, consistency across exams may matter more than maximizing any single score.
- If you’re already comfortably ahead in a subject, additional hours there produce diminishing returns — that time is usually better spent shoring up a weaker subject, even one with a stricter curve.
Step 4 — Build a Rough Time Allocation
A simple way to allocate remaining study hours across multiple exams:
- Rank your exams by how far you are from your target score (use recent practice exam composite percentages against the subject’s thresholds)
- Within that ranking, give a slight priority boost to exams with generous curves, since study time converts to score gains more efficiently there
- Give a slight priority reduction to exams where you’ve already cleared your credit-threshold goal with margin to spare
- Reassess every week or two using a fresh practice exam, not just your initial assumption
Step 5 — Recheck Your Estimate as You Go
