Dog Age Examples by Breed Size: Small, Medium, Large & Giant

Example Set 1: Five-Year-Old Dog, Four Sizes

All four dogs below are exactly 5 years old. Only their adult size category changes.

Example 3: A Six-Year-Old Giant Breed Compared to a Six-Year-Old Small Breed

At 6 years old:

  • Small breed: 24 + (6−2) × 4 = 40 human years — solidly a mature adult, likely not yet senior.
  • Giant breed: 24 + (6−2) × 7 = 52 human years — already past the typical giant-breed senior threshold.

Example 4: The Epigenetic Method, for Comparison

The UCSD epigenetic formula doesn’t adjust for size at all — it gives one number regardless of breed. For a 10-year-old dog of any size:

16 × ln(10) + 31 = 16 × 2.303 + 31 ≈ 67.8 human years

That result sits between the breed-size method’s medium (64) and large (72) estimates for the same age — a reasonable midpoint, but one that can’t tell you whether your specific dog is a small breed still in its prime or a giant breed already showing its age.
