Why Natural Lifters Care About FFMI Specifically

Unlike most body composition metrics, FFMI comes with a widely cited statistical reference point tied directly to natural vs. enhanced muscularity — which is exactly why natural bodybuilders and lifters use it more than the general fitness population. Where the ~25 Reference Point Actually Comes From

Kouri, Pope, Katz, and Oliva’s 1995 study compared 157 male athletes — 83 users of anabolic-androgenic steroids and 74 nonusers. Every drug-free athlete’s normalized FFMI extended up to a well-defined limit of 25.0, while many steroid users scored well above it, with some exceeding 30. A separate reference sample — 20 Mr. America winners from the pre-steroid era of competitive bodybuilding (1939–1959) — had a mean normalized FFMI of 25.4, reinforcing the number as a meaningful ceiling for elite natural muscularity specifically, not just an average lifter’s ceiling.

Why 25 Is a Statistical Reference, Not a Hard Ceiling

The study’s sample, while informative, was 157 athletes — not an exhaustive survey of every natural lifter who has ever existed. Individual genetic variation, especially in muscle insertion points, bone structure, and androgen receptor sensitivity, means some genetically exceptional natural athletes score slightly above 25. Measurement error in body fat percentage (see below) can also push an accurately-muscled person’s calculated FFMI above 25 without their actual fat-free mass being unusual. Treat 25 as “very rare without pharmacological enhancement,” not as a strict biological wall nobody natural can cross.

What a Realistic Natural Progression Looks Like

Most natural lifters plateau well below 25, and that’s expected, not a sign of doing something wrong. The FFMI reference ranges show average trained men typically in the 18–20 range, with 20–22 representing clearly above-average muscularity, and 22–25 already representing an advanced, near-ceiling level of natural muscular development that takes most lifters years of consistent, well-executed training to approach.

What FFMI Doesn’t Measure

FFMI reflects total fat-free mass relative to height — it says nothing about muscle distribution, symmetry, definition, or which specific muscle groups carry that mass. Two lifters with identical FFMI can look meaningfully different depending on training history, genetics for muscle insertion length, and current body fat percentage (higher body fat can visually mask an already-high FFMI). FFMI is a useful screening number, not a complete picture of physique development.
