How Unlucky Am I? Ranking Your OSRS Dry Streak
“Am I unlucky?” has a precise answer, and it is usually no. The useful question is not what percentage of the drop you have “earned” — it is what share of players in your exact position are also still waiting.
The one number that matters
Share still dry = (1 − 1/n)^k
Feed your drop rate and kill count into the OSRS dry calculator and subtract its answer from 100%. That remainder is your rarity: the slice of players at your kill count who also have nothing.
If it says 14%, roughly 1 in 7 players is where you are. That is not a bad beat, that is a Tuesday.
The ladder, for a 1/512 drop

Two things stand out.
Reaching the “expected” kill count means almost nothing. At exactly 512 KC on a 1/512 item, one player in three has nothing. That is a mathematical property, not misfortune — the 63.2% figure holds for every drop rate, which the drop probability formula reference works through.
Real rarity starts around 3× the expected count. You need roughly 1,500 KC — about 3× — before you are in the top 5%, and about 4× before the top 2%. Most posts complaining about a dry streak are somewhere in the first two rows.
Scaling it to any drop rate
The ladder above generalises. Because the maths depends only on the ratio of kills to drop rate, these multiples hold for any item:

So a player 3× dry on a 1/172 Scythe (516 KC) and one 3× dry on a 1/3,428 Twisted bow (10,284 KC) are equally unlucky — both in the same 5%. The absolute kill counts differ enormously; the rarity is identical.
This is the fastest way to sanity-check a streak without a calculator: divide your KC by the drop rate denominator. Under 2×, you are ordinary. Over 4×, you have a story.
Three things this number does not mean
It is not your personal probability. “2% still dry” describes a population. You are one member of it. It does not mean you have a 2% chance of anything going forward.
It does not accumulate into a debt. Being in the unlucky 2% grants nothing. The next kill is the same roll it always was, at the same rate. This is the point people most often get wrong, and it is covered in full in 5 drop rate mistakes that make you think you’re dry.
It is not evidence of a broken RNG. Someone has to be in the tail. With enough players grinding an item, the 0.3% outcome happens to thousands of accounts — it is guaranteed to happen to someone, and there is nothing distinguishing about being that someone.
Before you trust the number
Check three things about your inputs:
- Is the drop rate current? Rates change with game updates — Dragon warhammer’s rate was buffed, for instance. Verify on the OSRS Wiki rather than relying on a number you remember.
- Is the rate conditional? Some rates depend on difficulty or invocation level. Use the one that applied to the kills you actually did.
- Does the table roll more than once per kill? If so, your effective per-kill chance is better than 1/n, and a naive calculation overstates how unlucky you are.
Get those right and the rarity figure is exact. Get them wrong and you may be calculating a streak that is not as remarkable as it looks — or, occasionally, more so.
Using it to decide something
The rarity number is descriptive, not predictive, so it should not drive a decision on its own. What it is good for is calibration: if you are at 1.2× the drop rate and considering quitting the grind, the ladder tells you that you have barely started. If you are at 4×, it tells you that continuing is a choice about time, not about luck turning.
