Why the Same Age Predicts Very Differently by Size
The clearest way to see why size category matters is to compare puppies of similar ages but different size categories side by side. These examples use the same growth-curve math behind the puppy weight calculator.
Example 1 — Toy/Small Breed, 12 Weeks Old
Current weight: 3.5 lb. At 12 weeks, a toy/small breed puppy is typically around 42% of adult weight.
Predicted Adult Weight = 3.5 ÷ 0.42 ≈ 8.3 lb
Toy breeds are already well into their growth curve by 12 weeks, which is why the prediction is fairly close to the current weight already.
Example 2 — Medium Breed, 16 Weeks Old
Current weight: 9 lb. At 16 weeks, a medium breed puppy is typically around 45% of adult weight.
Predicted Adult Weight = 9 ÷ 0.45 = 20.0 lb
Example 3 — Large Breed, 20 Weeks Old
Current weight: 22 lb. At 20 weeks, a large breed puppy is typically around 44% of adult weight.
Predicted Adult Weight = 22 ÷ 0.44 = 50.0 lb
Note that a large breed puppy at 20 weeks (44%) is at almost the same percentage of adult weight as a medium breed puppy at 16 weeks (45%) — large breeds simply take longer at every stage to reach the same percentage milestone.
Example 4 — Giant Breed, 24 Weeks Old
Current weight: 38 lb. At 24 weeks, a giant breed puppy is typically around 42% of adult weight.
Predicted Adult Weight = 38 ÷ 0.42 ≈ 90.5 lb
Even at 24 weeks — six months old — a giant breed puppy has typically reached less than half its eventual adult weight, reflecting how much growth (and time) remains ahead for this category. Example 5 — Large Breed, Later Prediction at 52 Weeks
Current weight: 63 lb. At 52 weeks (one year), a large breed puppy is typically around 90% of adult weight.
Predicted Adult Weight = 63 ÷ 0.90 = 70.0 lb
Compare this to Example 3’s prediction from the same size category at 20 weeks — both estimate a full-grown weight, but the 52-week prediction rests on a far smaller remaining unknown (only 10% of growth left to happen) than the 20-week prediction (56% still ahead). This is exactly why predictions made later in a puppy’s growth are more reliable than early ones.
The Pattern Across All Five Examples
At any shared age, larger size categories sit at a lower percentage of adult weight than smaller ones — which is precisely why applying one universal growth curve (like the commonly repeated “double your puppy’s weight at 4 months” rule) systematically over- or under-predicts depending on which size category a puppy actually falls into.
