How to Identify and Test Silver Purity at Home

Before running any number through the scrap silver calculator, you need to know two things: is it actually silver, and what purity. Here’s how to check both at home, and where each method’s limits are.

Step 1 — Check for a Hallmark First

Look closely for a small stamped mark, often on the underside, inside a ring band, or near a clasp — common marks include “925” or “Sterling” (92.5%), “900” or “Coin” (90%), “958” or “Britannia” (95.8%), and “800”/“830”/“835” (European). A hallmark is the fastest, most direct purity indicator — but don’t stop there, since hallmarks can be worn away, missing on older pieces, or (rarely) fraudulent on counterfeit items.

Step 2 — Run the Magnet Test

Silver is not magnetic, so a strong magnet shouldn’t stick to a genuine silver item. This test is quick and useful for ruling out obvious fakes (many counterfeit “silver” items use magnetic base metals), but it’s not definitive on its own — some counterfeiters specifically use non-magnetic metals like stainless steel or nickel silver (which contains no actual silver despite the name) precisely to pass this test. Use it as a first screen, not a final answer.

Step 3 — Look for Tarnish

Genuine silver tarnishes over time, developing a dark, sometimes yellowish-to-black patina, especially in areas exposed to less air and light (like the underside of flatware). A complete absence of any tarnish on an older-looking piece can be a mild red flag, though heavily polished or recently cleaned silver can also look tarnish-free. This is a soft indicator, not a conclusive test by itself.

Step 4 — Consider a Professional Acid Test

Jewelers and pawn shops use nitric-acid-based testing kits that react differently depending on the metal’s purity, giving a much more reliable read than any at-home visual check. This test does mark or lightly damage a small, usually inconspicuous spot on the item, which is worth knowing before requesting it on a valuable or sentimental piece.

Step 5 — Know What Doesn’t Actually Work

Some commonly repeated “tests” — like the ice-cube test (claiming silver’s high thermal conductivity will melt ice unusually fast) — are unreliable for casual, non-scientific home use, since the difference in melt speed compared to several other conductive metals isn’t dramatic enough to distinguish reliably by eye. Don’t rely on folk tests that aren’t backed by an actual purity reading; a hallmark check plus a magnet test, or a professional acid/XRF test for anything valuable, is a much sounder combination.

Step 6 — When in Doubt, Get a Professional Opinion

For anything with meaningful potential value — a complete flatware set, an antique piece, or an item without a clear hallmark — a local jeweler, coin shop, or refiner can run a quick, low-cost purity test (often an XRF scan, which is non-destructive) before you commit to a melt-value estimate.
