6 Common Travel Time Mistakes That Wreck Your Schedule
Travel time errors share a shape: each one produces an estimate that is too low, and each is invisible until you are already late. The travel time calculator handles most of them automatically, but knowing what it is protecting you from tells you when to override it.
1. Dividing distance by cruise speed and calling it flight time
A 300-mile flight at 500 mph is 36 minutes of cruise. It is not a 36-minute flight. Add the 30-minute buffer for taxi, takeoff, climb, descent, and landing and the real gate-to-gate figure is 66 minutes — nearly double.
The error scales inversely with distance, which is what makes it sneaky. On a 1,500-mile flight the same buffer is 14% of the total and skipping it is a rounding error. On a short hop it is 45% and skipping it makes the estimate useless. Short flights feel slow for the distance covered for exactly this reason: the ground procedures take about the same time whether the flight is 300 miles or 3,000.
2. Using straight-line distance for a drive
Great-circle distance is correct for flights and wrong for driving. Roads follow terrain, coastlines, and property lines. On a route around a bay or through mountains, road distance can run 30–50% above the straight line.
Take the road distance from a mapping app. The flight tab is the only place a point-to-point figure belongs.
3. Treating the speed limit as your average speed
A 70 mph interstate does not produce a 70 mph average. Merges, construction, congestion, and the stretches at either end where you are not on the interstate at all pull it down. That is why the calculator’s highway preset is 65–70 mph rather than the posted limit, and why the mixed preset sits at 45–55.
Choosing a preset that is one tier too optimistic is the most common driving error. If a route is “mostly highway” with a town in the middle, mixed is usually closer than highway.
4. Ignoring direction on a long flight
The calculator uses one cruise speed regardless of heading, which quietly assumes still air. Real routes are not flown in still air.
NOAA describes jet streams as narrow bands of strong upper-atmosphere wind, typically near 30,000 feet — cruise altitude — flowing west to east and strongest in winter. An eastbound flight rides that flow; the westbound return fights it. On US transcontinental routes the difference commonly runs 30–90 minutes.
So the calculator slightly overestimates eastbound and underestimates westbound on long routes. Airlines already account for this, which is why a published schedule lists different durations in each direction. On anything transcontinental or transoceanic, use the airline’s number.
5. Confusing block time with the travel day
Block time is gate to gate. It excludes getting to the airport, security, baggage claim, and the trip from the arrival airport to wherever you are actually going.
A 3 h 30 m flight is realistically an 8-hour door-to-door day once those are counted — block time is only 44% of it. 6. Forgetting that stops are not free time
The driving equivalent of the buffer error. Eight hours of calculated drive time plus two fuel stops, a meal, and two rest breaks is a 9 h 45 m day — about 22% more.
The instinct is to assume you will make it back on the road. You will not: the average-speed preset already assumes normal progress while you are moving, so there is no slack to recover. On a multi-day trip the overhead applies every day and compounds.
