Weight Loss Percentage Worked Examples Across a Timeline
Four worked examples following one person’s tracking across a multi-month timeline, plus a pace check against the commonly cited healthy-pace guideline.
Example 1 — Month 1: Fast Early Progress
Starting weight: 220 lb. After 4 weeks: 209 lb.
Weight Loss % = (220 − 209) ÷ 220 × 100 = 11 ÷ 220 × 100 = 5.0%
Weekly pace = 5.0% ÷ 4 weeks = 1.25%/week
This pace runs above the commonly cited 0.5-1%/week guideline — not unusual in an early phase, where water weight and glycogen depletion typically account for a larger share of the drop than later on.
Example 2 — Month 3: Pace Slows (Plateau Territory)
Same person, now 12 weeks in, weighing 202 lb.
Weight Loss % = (220 − 202) ÷ 220 × 100 = 18 ÷ 220 × 100 = 8.2%
Weekly pace = 8.2% ÷ 12 weeks = 0.68%/week
The average weekly pace has settled back within the 0.5-1% range, and looking only at weeks 9-12 specifically might show an even flatter short-term trend — consistent with the metabolic adaptation described in why weight loss plateaus: metabolic adaptation explained, not necessarily a sign anything has gone wrong.
Example 3 — Goal Progress vs. Overall Percentage
Same person, goal weight of 180 lb, currently at 202 lb (still week 12).
Overall %: (220 − 202) ÷ 220 × 100 = 8.2%
Goal Progress %: (220 − 202) ÷ (220 − 180) × 100 = 18 ÷ 40 × 100 = 45.0%
Remaining: 202 − 180 = 22 lb to go
The 8.2% overall figure and the 45.0% goal-progress figure both describe the same person on the same day — they’re not in conflict, they’re answering different questions. Nearly halfway to the specific goal, despite only having shed a bit over 8% of total starting body weight.
Example 4 — Recomposition Month: Scale Barely Moves
A different scenario: someone new to resistance training starts at 175 lb. After 6 weeks of lifting plus a modest calorie deficit, they weigh 174 lb.
Weight Loss % = (175 − 174) ÷ 175 × 100 = 1 ÷ 175 × 100 = 0.57%
Taken at face value, this looks like a near-stall. But waist measurement is down almost an inch and strength has increased across all major lifts — a pattern consistent with body recomposition (simultaneous fat loss and muscle gain), where scale weight understates real progress.
