Anniversary Calculator — Years Married, Countdown & Gift Themes

Calculate exactly how many years you've been married, the days until your next anniversary, and the traditional and modern gift theme for that year.

Years Married counts full completed years since the wedding date, the same way age is counted. Days Until counts whole calendar days (non-inclusive) to the next anniversary — this year's date if it hasn't happened yet, otherwise next year's. Gift themes come from the traditional and modern US anniversary gift lists (Wikipedia, cross-checked against Hallmark); years without a widely agreed-upon theme are left blank rather than guessed.

Source: Wikipedia "Wedding anniversary" (traditional and modern US gift lists) cross-checked against Hallmark "Anniversary gifts by year" guidance. Years 21-24 (and 16-19) are omitted because sourcing for those specific years is inconsistent across references and largely unofficial marketing filler rather than an agreed-upon standard.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is 'years married' calculated?
Years married counts full completed years since your wedding date, the same way age is counted from a birth date. If your anniversary hasn't happened yet this year, the count stays at last year's total until the date arrives — so on the day itself, the count updates to include the year you just finished.
Why doesn't my anniversary year show a gift theme?
Years 16-19 and 21-24 are intentionally left blank. The traditional and modern US anniversary gift lists (Wikipedia, cross-checked against Hallmark) simply don't have a consistent, widely agreed-upon entry for those specific years — different sources list different materials, and most of what's out there for those years is unofficial marketing filler rather than an established standard. Rather than presenting a guess as fact, this calculator shows only your years married and countdown for those years and leaves the theme blank.
What's the difference between the traditional and modern gift lists?
The traditional list dates back to 19th-century European and American customs and was popularized in the US by an 1937 American National Retail Jewelers Association list. The modern list was developed later, largely by retailers, to reflect contemporary tastes and gift-giving habits. Both lists run in parallel for the same years — some years agree (Year 25 is Silver on both, Year 50 is Gold on both), and others diverge (Year 1 is Paper traditionally but Clocks on the modern list).
Does the calculator account for anniversaries that already happened this year?
Yes. If your anniversary date has already passed this year, the calculator automatically counts toward next year's anniversary instead of showing a negative or wrapped-around countdown. If today is your actual anniversary, it shows "Today!" instead of a day count.
Why do only some years have milestone status?
Every year technically has a name on the gift lists (where one exists), but a handful of years — 25th (Silver) and 50th (Gold) especially — are culturally treated as bigger milestones worth larger celebrations. This calculator highlights those two on its reference table, but every listed year's theme is shown the same way when it's your upcoming anniversary.
