Balatro Scoring Glossary: Chips, Mult, xMult & Hand Levels
Balatro’s scoring system uses a small set of terms constantly — Chips, Mult, xMult — that combine in a specific order every single hand. Here’s what each one means for the Balatro calculator.
Chips
The first half of the scoring formula: a base value set by the hand type played, plus the chip value of each scoring card, plus any flat Chip bonuses from jokers. Chips add together in a straightforward, linear way — nothing in the base game multiplies Chips the way xMult multiplies Mult.
Mult
The second half of the scoring formula: a base value set by the hand type, increased by flat Mult bonuses from jokers, then multiplied by any xMult effects. Unlike Chips, Mult has both an additive stage (flat +Mult) and a multiplicative stage (xMult) — see common Balatro scoring mistakes for how often these two stages get confused.
xMult
A multiplier applied to the current Mult total, rather than an amount added to it. An “x2 Mult” joker doubles whatever Mult has already accumulated from the base hand and any flat Mult bonuses — and multiple xMult effects compound with each other rather than simply adding up. See the Balatro calculator’s worked example for why this compounding makes xMult dramatically stronger than flat Mult at scale.
Scoring Cards
The specific cards within a played hand that actually count toward the Chips total — not necessarily all 5 cards played. For example, in a Pair, typically only the two paired cards score their chip value (plus whatever else the specific hand’s rules count), not the other cards in the play. Check in-game which cards highlight as “scored” before entering them into the Balatro calculator.
Base Chips and Base Mult (Level 1)
Every hand type — High Card, Pair, Flush, Full House, and so on — has its own starting Chips and Mult value at Level 1, before any hand leveling. A Flush starts at 35 Chips and 4 Mult; a Four of a Kind starts at 60 Chips and 7 Mult. These Level 1 values are what the Balatro calculator uses by default.
Hand Level (Planet Cards)
Playing Planet cards (or the Black Hole spectral card) permanently raises a specific hand type’s base Chips and Mult for the rest of that run — a Flush leveled up several times scores meaningfully more than a fresh Level 1 Flush, even with the identical cards played. See understanding Balatro hand leveling with Planet cards for the exact per-level increase for every hand type.
Additive vs. Multiplicative Jokers
Additive jokers add a fixed amount to Chips or Mult every time they trigger — for example, “+30 Chips” or “+4 Mult.” Multiplicative jokers (xMult) multiply the current Mult total instead of adding to it. The distinction matters enormously at scale: stacking multiple xMult jokers compounds, while stacking multiple additive jokers only ever accumulates. See Balatro calculator examples for a side-by-side comparison.
