What Corrected Age Means
Corrected age (also called adjusted age) answers a different question than chronological age. Chronological age asks: how much time has passed since birth? Corrected age asks: how much time has passed since the baby’s original due date? For a baby born early, those two answers diverge — and for developmental testing, the corrected answer is usually the one that matters, because it compares the child against peers at the same stage of development rather than the same number of calendar days old.

The Formula

Forty weeks is used as the full-term reference point. The correction shifts the effective “birthday” forward to what would have been the due date, then runs the same calendar-subtraction age formula from that shifted date instead of the actual birth date.
Worked example: A baby is born April 10, 2026, at 34 weeks gestation and is assessed September 10, 2026.

At the same assessment visit, this baby is 5 months old chronologically but only 3 months and 19 days old developmentally — nearly a full month-and-a-half of difference that matters for which norm table gets used.
When Correction Applies
Full term is defined as 40 weeks gestation. Any birth before that has some correction available, but adjustment is typically only applied — and only clinically meaningful — for infants born at or before 37 weeks (preterm). The more weeks early, the larger the correction: a baby born at 32 weeks is corrected by 8 weeks; a baby born at 37 weeks by only 3 weeks.
Growth measurements (weight, length, head circumference) are plotted using corrected age rather than chronological age through at least 24 months, giving preterm infants time to show catch-up growth without being flagged as growing poorly against full-term norms.
Corrected Age Is Domain-Specific for Developmental Testing

Corrected age is not a replacement for chronological age everywhere — it’s a substitute used specifically for early-childhood developmental and growth assessment. When Correction Stops
Most clinical guidance recommends corrected age for developmental assessment until at least 24 months, with language and motor domains sometimes corrected through 36 months as shown above. After that window closes, chronological age is used for all subsequent testing regardless of birth history — the catch-up period is considered complete for practical scoring purposes, even though research on optimal termination points is still evolving and not fully standardized across studies.
