Copart Membership Types: Basic vs Premier Compared

Copart requires membership to bid. The membership level you choose affects your buyer fee tier, virtual bid fees, and access to certain vehicle categories. Understanding the difference before your first purchase prevents unexpected costs. After calculating your membership value, use the Copart fee calculator to model total purchase costs at each fee tier.

Basic Membership (Free)

Basic membership gives access to Copart’s auction platform without a membership fee. However:

  • Higher buyer fees: Basic members pay unsecured buyer fee rates — typically the higher tier in Copart’s fee schedule
  • Full virtual bid fees: No waiver or reduction
  • Vehicle category restrictions: Some specialty categories (heavy equipment, specialty vehicles) may require Premier

Best for: Occasional buyers purchasing 1–3 vehicles per year who want to evaluate the platform before committing to Premier.

Premier Membership (~$129/year)

Premier membership is Copart’s paid tier. The key benefit is access to secured buyer fee rates — the lower tier in Copart’s graduated fee schedule.

When Does Premier Pay for Itself?

At a $30 buyer fee saving per transaction, Premier’s $129/year cost breaks even after 5 purchases (5 × $30 = $150 in savings). At higher bid amounts where the saving is $60+, it breaks even after just 3 purchases.

Purchases/yearSaving per purchaseAnnual savingNet vs $129 cost
1$30$30−$99 (not worth it)
3$30$90−$39 (borderline)
5$30$150+$21 (break even)
10$30$300+$171 (clear value)
5$60+$300++$171+ (clear value)

If you buy 5+ vehicles per year on Copart, Premier is almost always worth it. If you’re a one-time buyer, Basic saves you the $129.

Virtual Bid Fee Reduction

Premier members may receive a reduction or waiver on virtual bid fees under certain conditions (Copart adjusts these terms periodically). At $99–$149 per virtual bid fee, even a single waiver covers a significant portion of the annual membership cost.

Dealer / Broker Membership

Copart also offers dealer-level access for licensed dealers. Dealers typically receive:

  • Access to all vehicle categories including those restricted from public buyers
  • Volume pricing on buyer fees
  • Dedicated account management

Dealer access requires proof of dealer license and is separate from the consumer Basic/Premier tiers.

How Membership Affects Your Fee Calculation

When using the Copart fee calculator, select your membership tier to see the correct buyer fee rate applied to your winning bid. Basic and Premier buyers see materially different totals — especially on higher-value purchases.
