Dog Food Portion Examples by Size and Life Stage

Seeing the dog food calculator’s RER/DER formula applied to a few different dogs makes it easier to trust the number it gives for your own. Here are three worked examples across very different sizes and life stages.

Example 1 — A Small Senior Dog

12 lb senior dog (8 years old), fed a food rated at 350 kcal/cup:

Weight in kg = 12 ÷ 2.20462 ≈ 5.44 kg
RER = 70 × 5.44^0.75 ≈ 259 kcal
DER = 259 × 1.2 (senior multiplier) ≈ 311 kcal
Daily portion = 311 ÷ 350 kcal/cup ≈ 0.9 cups/day

At just under a cup a day, precision matters more for a small dog than a large one — a measuring cup rather than a scoop-by-eye estimate makes a proportionally bigger difference here. Senior dogs also carry a wider range of individual variation than the ×1.2 multiplier alone captures, since some older dogs stay quite active while others slow down substantially; body condition tracking matters especially here. Example 2 — A Large Active Adult Dog

70 lb neutered adult dog, moderately-to-highly active, fed a food rated at 420 kcal/cup:

Weight in kg = 70 ÷ 2.20462 ≈ 31.75 kg
RER = 70 × 31.75^0.75 ≈ 942 kcal
DER = 942 × 2.0 (active category, low end of range) ≈ 1,884 kcal
Daily portion = 1,884 ÷ 420 kcal/cup ≈ 4.5 cups/day

Because the active/working multiplier ranges from ×2.0 to ×5.0, this example uses the low end for a dog that gets regular exercise (daily runs, hiking) but isn’t a competitive working or sporting dog. Example 3 — A Growing Puppy

18 lb puppy, 3 months old, fed a puppy food rated at 480 kcal/cup:

Weight in kg = 18 ÷ 2.20462 ≈ 8.16 kg
RER = 70 × 8.16^0.75 ≈ 336 kcal
DER = 336 × 3.0 (0–4 month puppy multiplier) ≈ 1,008 kcal
Daily portion = 1,008 ÷ 480 kcal/cup ≈ 2.1 cups/day

That total should be split across 3–4 meals a day rather than one or two, since young puppies have small stomachs and benefit from more frequent, smaller feedings. It’s also worth recalculating every couple of weeks during this stage — unlike an adult dog’s relatively stable weight, a puppy’s weight (and therefore its RER) is changing constantly during rapid growth. What These Three Examples Show

The differences between these three portions come almost entirely from two inputs: the life-stage/activity multiplier and the food’s calorie density — not from body weight alone. A 70 lb active adult and an 18 lb puppy end up needing broadly comparable cup volumes per day (4.5 vs. 2.1 cups) despite one weighing nearly four times the other, purely because the puppy’s multiplier is so much higher relative to its smaller RER base. A Reminder on Individual Variation

All three examples above use the standard RER/DER formula, but real dogs commonly vary from the calculated DER by as much as ±50% depending on breed, coat, climate, and individual metabolism.
