How to Use This Calculator

  1. 1

Enter weekly gross incomes for both parents

Enter the non-custodial parent (NCP) and custodial parent (CP) weekly gross income before taxes. Convert monthly salary to weekly: monthly ÷ 4.333, or annual ÷ 52.

  2. 2

    Select number of children

Select the number of children covered by this support order (1-6). Children from other relationships not in this order are handled through the Prior Child Support adjustment, not this field.

  3. 3

    Add adjustments if applicable

Enter any court-ordered child support paid for children from prior relationships, and any court-ordered spousal maintenance paid. These reduce the adjusted gross income used in the formula.

  4. 4

    Enter add-on expenses

Enter weekly work-related childcare costs and the weekly cost of health insurance premiums specifically for the children (not the full family premium). These are added to the Basic Support Obligation before dividing proportionally.

  5. 5

    Enter NCP overnights per year

Enter the number of overnight visits the non-custodial parent has with the children per year. Below 52: no credit. 52-182: graduated parenting time credit reduces NCP obligation. 183+: equal parenting formula applies.

What Each Value Means

Basic Support Obligation (BSO) ($/week)
The core child support amount from the Indiana guideline schedule, based on combined weekly adjusted income and number of children. Represents the total economic cost of raising the children at the combined income level. Both parents contribute to this amount proportionally based on their income share.
Combined Weekly Adjusted Income (CWAI) ($/week)
The sum of both parents' weekly gross income after deducting court-ordered prior child support and spousal maintenance payments. Used as the lookup key in the BSO schedule. The floor is $100/week — below this, the court determines support on a case-by-case basis.
Parenting Time Credit (% of NCP's BSO share)
A reduction in the NCP's child support obligation based on the number of overnight visits per year. Applied to the NCP's share of the BSO (not to childcare or insurance add-ons). Graduated from 6% at 52 overnights to 19% at 132-182 overnights. Recognizes that the NCP bears direct costs for the children during their parenting time.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is child support calculated in Indiana?
Indiana uses the Income Shares model. Both parents' weekly gross incomes are added together to get the Combined Weekly Adjusted Income (CWAI). The Basic Support Obligation (BSO) is looked up in the Indiana guideline schedule based on CWAI and number of children. Each parent pays their proportional share: NCP's obligation = BSO × (NCP income / combined income). Work-related childcare and the children's health insurance premium are added on top, then divided proportionally. The non-custodial parent (NCP) receives a parenting time credit if they have 52+ overnight visits per year.
What is the parenting time credit in Indiana child support?
Indiana reduces the non-custodial parent's child support obligation when they have significant overnight parenting time. At 52+ overnights per year, a graduated credit applies to the NCP's share of the Basic Support Obligation. The credit increases from 6% at 52 overnights to approximately 19% at 132-182 overnights. At 183+ overnights (near-equal parenting), a different formula applies where the higher-earning parent pays only the difference between the two parents' obligations based on an adjusted BSO.
What income counts as gross income for Indiana child support?
Indiana includes virtually all income: wages, salary, tips, commissions, bonuses, overtime, self-employment net income (after ordinary business expenses), rental income, dividends, interest, Social Security benefits (disability and retirement, not SSI), unemployment compensation, and workers' compensation. Income is typically reported as weekly gross (before taxes). Excluded: TANF, Supplemental Security Income (SSI), and child support received for other children.
What adjustments reduce my gross income in Indiana?
Two deductions are allowed from weekly gross income: (1) Court-ordered child support you pay for prior-born children from another relationship. (2) Court-ordered spousal maintenance you pay. These are subtracted before calculating your adjusted gross income used in the formula. Voluntary payments, informal agreements, and non-court-ordered amounts do not qualify.
Was the Indiana child support formula updated in 2024?
Yes — Indiana updated its Child Support Guidelines effective January 1, 2024. Key changes: the Basic Support Obligation schedule was updated using 2013-2019 data (Rothbarth methodology), increasing most amounts by 4-22%; the automatic 6% credit for uninsured medical expenses was eliminated — all medical expenses now split proportionally from the first dollar; the low-income floor was raised; and mandatory worksheets are now required even when parents agree on $0 support.
