Navy Body Fat Worked Examples: Measurement Sensitivity
Three worked examples: a male calculation, a female calculation, and a sensitivity check showing how much a small measurement error moves the final result.
Example 1 — Male, Mid-Range Build
Waist 36 in, neck 16 in, height 70 in.
%BF = 86.010 × log₁₀(36 − 16) − 70.041 × log₁₀(70) + 36.76
= 86.010 × log₁₀(20) − 70.041 × log₁₀(70) + 36.76
= 86.010 × 1.3010 − 70.041 × 1.8451 + 36.76
= 111.9 − 129.25 + 36.76
= 19.4%
This falls in the “Acceptable” category (18-24%) for men.
Example 2 — Female, Athletic Build
Waist 27 in, hip 36 in, neck 12.5 in, height 66 in.
%BF = 163.205 × log₁₀(27 + 36 − 12.5) − 97.684 × log₁₀(66) − 78.387
= 163.205 × log₁₀(50.5) − 97.684 × log₁₀(66) − 78.387
= 163.205 × 1.7033 − 97.684 × 1.8195 − 78.387
= 278.0 − 177.75 − 78.387
= 21.9%
This lands right at the boundary between “Athletes” (14-20%) and “Fitness” (21-24%) for women — close enough that a repeat measurement to confirm is worthwhile before treating either category as definitive.
Example 3 — Measurement Sensitivity Check
Using Example 1’s male measurements, but with the waist measured 1 inch too tight (compressing the skin), reading 35 in instead of the true 36 in:
%BF = 86.010 × log₁₀(35 − 16) − 70.041 × log₁₀(70) + 36.76
= 86.010 × log₁₀(19) − 70.041 × log₁₀(70) + 36.76
= 86.010 × 1.2788 − 129.25 + 36.76
= 110.0 − 129.25 + 36.76
= 17.5%
A single inch of waist measurement error — easily caused by pulling the tape too snug — shifts the result from 19.4% down to 17.5%, a difference of nearly 2 full percentage points. See common Navy body fat calculation mistakes for the specific technique errors that most commonly cause exactly this kind of shift.
Running These Yourself
Every result above matches what the Navy body fat calculator produces from the same neck, waist, height, and (for women) hip inputs — enter your own measurements to reproduce these results, and take each measurement two or three times to average out the kind of small errors shown in Example 3. These estimates are not the official assessment — Navy official BCA: standards, procedure and how it differs covers what actually happens at a command screening.
