Body Composition Measurement Methods Glossary

Body fat can be estimated several different ways, each with different accuracy, cost, and accessibility. Here’s how the circumference method used by the Navy body fat calculator compares to the other terms you’ll see referenced.

Circumference Method

The approach this calculator uses — estimating body fat from neck, waist, height, and (for women) hip measurements using the Hodgdon & Beckett formula. Cheap, fast, and requires no special equipment, at the cost of being less precise than lab-based methods, especially for people with atypical fat distribution.

DEXA (Dual-Energy X-Ray Absorptiometry)

A medical imaging scan that measures bone density, lean mass, and fat mass separately using two X-ray energy levels — widely considered a gold-standard reference method for body composition, available at some clinics and specialized fitness facilities, though it requires equipment and cost a circumference tape doesn’t.

Hydrostatic (Underwater) Weighing

An older gold-standard method that calculates body density (and from it, body fat percentage) by comparing a person’s weight in air versus weight fully submerged in water, based on the principle that fat tissue is less dense than lean tissue. Highly accurate but requires specialized equipment and full water submersion, making it far less accessible than a circumference estimate.

Air Displacement Plethysmography (Bod Pod)

A method similar in principle to hydrostatic weighing but using air displacement in a sealed chamber instead of water submersion to estimate body volume and, from it, body density and fat percentage. Also a lab-based method requiring specialized equipment.

Essential Fat

The minimum amount of body fat needed for basic physiological function (hormone regulation, organ protection, and other essential processes) — roughly 2-5% for men and 10-13% for women, per the Navy body fat calculator’s category table. Going below this range isn’t a fitness achievement; it’s a health risk.

Subcutaneous vs. Visceral Fat

Subcutaneous fat sits just under the skin and is what a tape measure or caliper is largely picking up. Visceral fat surrounds internal organs deeper in the abdominal cavity and carries more independent health risk at a given amount, but isn’t distinguished separately by circumference-method formulas like the Navy method — two people with an identical Navy body fat percentage can have very different visceral-to-subcutaneous fat ratios that a circumference formula can’t detect.

AC (Abdominal Circumference) / BC (Body Circumference) — Official Navy Terms

Terms specific to the Navy’s current official Body Composition Assessment (BCA): AC refers to a single-site screening measurement, while BC refers to the full multi-site measurement (neck plus abdomen for men; neck, waist, and hip for women) used to estimate body fat when the AC screening step is exceeded.
