No-Vig Calculator Examples: Different Market Types

Three worked examples below, using the same multiplicative devig formula the no-vig calculator runs. For term definitions, see the sports betting odds glossary.

Example 1 — Player Prop Line (Higher Vig)

-130 (Over) / +105 (Under)

Implied (Over, -130)  = 130 ÷ 230 = 56.52%
Implied (Under, +105) = 100 ÷ 205 = 48.78%
Total = 105.30%  →  Vig = 5.30%

No-vig (Over)  = 56.52% ÷ 105.30% = 53.68%  →  fair odds ≈ -116
No-vig (Under) = 48.78% ÷ 105.30% = 46.32%  →  fair odds ≈ +116

Player prop markets typically carry higher vig than major point spreads — 5.30% here versus the standard -110/-110 spread’s 4.76% — reflecting lower liquidity and less competitive pressure on the book to tighten the line.

Example 2 — Heavy Favorite Moneyline

-400 (Favorite) / +320 (Underdog)

Implied (Favorite, -400)  = 400 ÷ 500 = 80.00%
Implied (Underdog, +320)  = 100 ÷ 420 = 23.81%
Total = 103.81%  →  Vig = 3.81%

No-vig (Favorite) = 80.00% ÷ 103.81% = 77.06%  →  fair odds ≈ -336
No-vig (Underdog) = 23.81% ÷ 103.81% = 22.94%  →  fair odds ≈ +336

Notice the favorite’s raw -400 line overstates its edge more than the fair -336 suggests — a meaningful gap on a heavy favorite. As covered in the no-vig calculator’s methodology, the multiplicative method can slightly overcorrect at this level of lopsidedness, so treat -336 as a close approximation rather than an exact figure.

Example 3 — Near-Even, Low-Vig Line

-105 (Side A) / -105 (Side B)

Implied (each side) = 105 ÷ 205 = 51.22%
Total = 102.44%  →  Vig = 2.44%

No-vig (each side) = 51.22% ÷ 102.44% = 50.00%  →  fair odds = +100

At only 2.44% vig — about half the standard -110/-110 line’s 4.76% — this is an unusually tight, bettor-friendly line, and its fair odds land at exactly even money on both sides.

What These Examples Show

Vig percentage varies meaningfully by market type and liquidity — from about 2.44% on a tight line to 5.30% on a player prop in these examples. See using no-vig odds to find value bets for how to use this kind of fair-odds comparison to evaluate whether a specific book’s price is worth taking.
