Weighted Grade Examples for Common Syllabus Structures

Why Worked Examples Help

Seeing the weighted grade formula applied to a real syllabus structure makes it far easier to trust — and double-check — your own result. The four examples below cover a fully graded course, a STEM-style exam-heavy course, a humanities-style course, and a points-based course that needs converting to percentages first. Each one can be reproduced directly in the weighted grade calculator.

Example 1 — A Fully Graded General Education Course

Syllabus structure, all categories graded:

Weighted Average = (40×82 + 30×95 + 20×88 + 10×100) ÷ 100
                 = (3,280 + 2,850 + 1,760 + 1,000) ÷ 100
                 = 8,890 ÷ 100
                 = 88.9%

Final grade: 88.9% — a B under the standard 10-point scale (see the grading scale glossary for the full letter-grade table). Every category is already graded here, so there’s no required-score calculation to run.

Example 2 — STEM Course With a Heavily Weighted Final

Syllabus structure, final exam still ungraded:

Graded weight so far: 25 + 15 + 10 = 50%.

Current Weighted Average = (25×78 + 15×92 + 10×100) ÷ 50
                          = (1,950 + 1,380 + 1,000) ÷ 50
                          = 4,330 ÷ 50
                          = 86.6%

Suppose the target overall grade is 88% (a B+ under many plus/minus scales). With the final worth the remaining 50%:

Required Score = (88×100 − 86.6×50) ÷ 50
               = (8,800 − 4,330) ÷ 50
               = 4,470 ÷ 50
               = 89.4%

Example 3 — Humanities Course With Participation and Papers

Syllabus structure, final paper still ungraded:

Graded weight so far: 30 + 25 + 25 = 80%.

Current Weighted Average = (30×90 + 25×95 + 25×84) ÷ 80
                          = (2,700 + 2,375 + 2,100) ÷ 80
                          = 7,175 ÷ 80
                          = 89.7%

Target grade: 90% (an A). With the final paper worth the remaining 20%:

Required Score = (90×100 − 89.7×80) ÷ 20
               = (9,000 − 7,176) ÷ 20
               = 1,824 ÷ 20
               = 91.2%

This student needs 91.2% on the final paper to reach a 90% overall A — achievable, but it requires the paper to score noticeably higher than the midterm did.

Example 4 — Points-Based Course Converted to Percentages

Some syllabi list raw point totals instead of stated percentages. Suppose a course totals 750 points across the term:

Each converted weight is the category’s points divided by 750 total points, rounded to a whole percent (13 + 20 + 27 + 40 = 100%). Now apply scores for the graded categories:

Current Weighted Average = (13×92 + 20×85 + 27×80) ÷ 60
                          = (1,196 + 1,700 + 2,160) ÷ 60
                          = 5,056 ÷ 60
                          = 84.3%

Target grade: 88%. With the final worth the remaining 40%:

Required Score = (88×100 − 84.3×60) ÷ 40
               = (8,800 − 5,058) ÷ 40
               ≈ 93.6%

This student needs roughly 93.6% on the final exam — a demanding but not impossible target. This example shows why converting a points-based course into percentage weights before calculating matters: entering raw point totals directly into a percentage-weighted formula would give a meaningless result.
