Full Sofa Set: Total Fabric Needed
The calculator below covers just seat cushions. Many sofas also have back cushions (typically thinner and shorter). Budget back cushions separately.
3-Seater Sofa Seat Cushions Only
3 cushions, 24”×24”×4”, 54” fabric:
| Configuration | Total Yards |
|---|---|
| No piping, no lining | 3.2 |
| With piping | 3.7 |
| With piping + 10% safety | 4.1 |
Order: 4–4.5 yards for a standard 3-seater sofa seat cushion set.
3-Seater Sofa: Seat + Back Cushions
Typical back cushions: 24”×12”×4” (shorter height, same width, thinner)
3 seat cushions (24”×24”×4”) + 3 back cushions (24”×12”×4”):

| Total (with piping on all) | 6.0 |
Order: 6–7 yards for a full 3-seater sofa seat + back cushion set.
3-Seater + Armchair Set (Matching Fabric)

Does Piping Use a Lot of Extra Fabric?
No. Piping adds only ½–¾ yard to a typical 3-cushion sofa project.
Why so little? Piping strips are only 1.5” wide. A single 1.5” × 54” strip yields 54” of piping length. A 24”×24”×4” box cushion needs about 204” of piping — only 4 strips = 6” of fabric = under ¼ yard.
For 3 cushions: about ¾ yard of piping fabric total. For full piping construction and cutting instructions, see How to Add Piping to Cushions.
Pattern Repeat: How Much Extra Fabric?
If your chosen fabric has a pattern repeat (a repeating design motif), each cushion panel must be cut starting at the same point in the repeat so patterns align across cushions.
Extra fabric needed = 1 pattern repeat per cushion width (per row across the fabric):
Extra per fabric width row = 1 pattern repeat
Rows for 3 cushions on 54" fabric:
Panels: 3 rows (3 pairs of panels)
Boxing: additional rows for boxing strips
Extra = 3 rows × repeat length
For an 8” repeat: 3 rows × 8” = 24” = ⅔ yard extra. Order the next full yard (add 1 yard above your base calculation when using patterned fabric). The complete pattern repeat formula is in Cushion Fabric Formulas.
Cost Comparison: New Cushion Covers vs New Cushions
Recovering existing foam inserts vs buying new pre-made cushions:
| Option | 3-Cushion Sofa | Quality |
|---|---|---|
| Pre-made replacement cushions (budget) | $60–$120 | Low — usually polyester fill |
| Pre-made replacement cushions (quality) | $150–$300 | Better — foam core |
| DIY covers from $15/yard fabric | $60–$90 fabric + thread | Custom — exact fit, quality fabric |
| Professional re-upholstery | $300–$600+ | Highest |
DIY is cost-competitive with mid-range pre-made cushions and allows custom fabric selection and sizing.
