Indoor vs Outdoor Cushion Fabric: How to Choose
Updated: May 26, 2026
The Fundamental Difference
Indoor fabrics are made for controlled environments with limited UV exposure, no rain, and low humidity. Outdoor fabrics are engineered specifically for continuous sun, rain, humidity, and mould conditions.
The key properties of outdoor fabric:
- UV resistance — colour doesn’t fade in sunlight
- Water resistance — fabric dries quickly; doesn’t absorb standing water
- Mildew resistance — resists mould growth in humid conditions
- Cleanability — can be bleach-cleaned without damage
Indoor fabric fails rapidly outdoors: cotton fades in a single season, linen rots in humidity, and velvet is ruined by the first rain.
Side-by-Side Comparison
| Property | Cotton Canvas (indoor) | Solution-Dyed Acrylic (outdoor) | Olefin (budget outdoor) |
|---|---|---|---|
| UV Fade Resistance | Poor — fades in 1–2 seasons | Excellent — 5–7+ seasons | Moderate — 2–3 seasons |
| Water Resistance | None — absorbs water | Excellent — water beads off | Good |
| Mildew Resistance | Poor | Excellent | Good |
| Rub Count | 15,000–25,000 | 50,000+ | 30,000–50,000 |
| Cleanability | Machine wash | Bleach-safe, machine wash | Machine wash |
| Touch/Feel | Soft | Slightly stiff | Stiff |
| Price (per yard) | $8–$18 | $18–$40 | $8–$15 |
| Sewing Ease | Easy | Easy | Moderate |
What “Solution-Dyed” Means
Standard fabrics are woven first, then dyed. Sun and bleach attack the dye on the surface of the fibres.
Solution-dyed fabric (Sunbrella, Outdura, Bella-Dura) reverses this: the colour is added to the liquid polymer before the fibre is extruded. The colour runs all the way through the fibre — there’s no surface dye to fade.
Result: A solution-dyed acrylic fabric in direct Australian or US Southwest sun will retain its colour after 5–7 years. The same design in cotton canvas fades in one summer.
Can You Use Indoor Fabric Outdoors?
Yes, but only for covered, sheltered areas:
- Covered porch or loggia (no direct rain)
- Sun room with UV-filtering glass
- Indoor/outdoor room with shade cloth roof
In these settings, cotton canvas can last 2–4 seasons. Still not ideal, but usable if budget is a constraint.
In direct sun + rain exposure, use only outdoor-rated fabric. Indoor fabric fails too quickly to be cost-effective even if cheaper upfront. For yardage calculations specific to outdoor cushion shapes, see How to Calculate Fabric for Outdoor Cushions.
Can You Use Outdoor Fabric Indoors?
Yes — solution-dyed acrylic (Sunbrella) is increasingly popular for indoor use, especially in high-traffic or pet homes. It’s bleach-safe, stain-resistant, and extremely durable. The main downsides: it’s more expensive than cotton canvas, and the texture is slightly stiffer.
Outdoor fabric used indoors will outlast any indoor fabric by a large margin in high-traffic applications (children, dogs). For a full comparison of all cushion fabric types including rub counts and prices, see Best Fabrics for Cushion Covers.
Water Resistance Levels
| Fabric Type | Water Behaviour | Dry Time |
|---|---|---|
| Cotton canvas | Absorbs immediately | Hours; can mildew if left wet |
| Cotton-linen blend | Absorbs quickly | 1–3 hours |
| Solution-dyed acrylic | Water beads on surface | 30–60 minutes |
| Marine vinyl | Fully waterproof | Instantly (wipe off) |
| Olefin | Quick-dry; absorbs some | 1–2 hours |
Sunbrella and similar fabrics have a factory-applied DWR (durable water repellent) finish. This can be reapplied with Sunbrella Fabric Protector spray after cleaning.
UV Resistance: How Long Until Fading?
Testing standard: AATCC 16 (Xenon arc exposure). Ratings are approximate real-world equivalents:
| Fabric | Expected Colour Retention | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Cotton canvas | 1–2 seasons (sunny climate) | Fades noticeably in first year |
| Olefin | 2–3 seasons | Better than cotton; reasonable budget choice |
| Solution-dyed acrylic | 5–7+ seasons | Industry-leading UV resistance |
| Marine vinyl | 3–5 seasons | Fades on the surface only; structural integrity intact |
Fabric Width and Cutting
Both indoor and outdoor fabrics are typically sold at:
- 54” (137 cm) — most common for home décor and upholstery fabrics
- 60” (152 cm) — some US outdoor fabrics
The cutting calculations are identical. The Cushion Fabric Calculator works for both fabric types — just enter your fabric width.
Cleaning Comparison
| Fabric | Cleaning Method | Can You Use Bleach? |
|---|---|---|
| Cotton canvas | Machine wash cold | No — bleach weakens cotton |
| Linen blend | Cold hand wash / machine | No |
| Sunbrella (solution-dyed) | Machine wash or hose off | Yes — bleach-safe |
| Marine vinyl | Wipe with soap + water | Mild only |
Sunbrella’s bleach-safe property is a significant practical advantage: if outdoor cushions develop mildew, a ¼ cup bleach + 1 tsp dish soap + 1 quart water solution can be applied, scrubbed, and rinsed without damaging the fabric.
Summary Recommendation
| Situation | Recommended Fabric |
|---|---|
| Outdoor, full sun, direct rain | Solution-dyed acrylic (Sunbrella) |
| Outdoor, budget priority | Olefin |
| Covered porch / sunroom | Canvas or light-duty outdoor fabric |
| Indoor sofa, heavy use | Canvas, linen blend, or outdoor fabric |
| Indoor decorative/accent | Any decorator fabric matching the aesthetic |
| Boats and marine use | Marine vinyl or Sunbrella |
Use the Cushion Fabric Calculator for fabric yardage — the calculation is identical for all fabric types.
