Common ERA Calculation Mistakes

ERA looks like a simple ratio, but it’s easy to get wrong in a handful of specific, repeatable ways. Here are the most common ones the ERA calculator is built to avoid.

Mistake 1 — Treating “6.1” as a Literal Decimal

This is the single most common ERA calculation error. Box scores write innings pitched as “6.1” or “6.2,” but the number after the period isn’t a decimal — it’s outs recorded in the partial inning. “6.1” means 6 innings plus 1 out (6⅓, or 6.333 as an actual fraction), not 6.1. Plugging 6.1 directly into the ERA formula instead of 6.333 produces a meaningfully wrong result. Mistake 2 — Counting Unearned Runs as Earned

Only runs that scored without the help of a fielding error or passed ball count toward ERA. A run that scored because a routine ground ball was booted, extending an inning that should have ended, is an unearned run and shouldn’t be added to the earned-run total used in the ERA formula. Mistake 3 — Using the Wrong Game-Length Multiplier

ERA is scaled to a standard game length — 9 innings for MLB and NCAA college baseball; 7 innings for NFHS high school baseball, Junior/Senior Little League, and most fastpitch softball; 6 innings for Little League Majors and most Minors divisions. Using the 9-inning multiplier for a 7-inning high school game inflates the reported ERA by about 29% compared to the correct figure, and using it for a 6-inning Little League game inflates it by 50%. Mistake 4 — Averaging Per-Game ERAs Instead of Combining Totals

A season ERA is not the average of each individual game’s ERA — it’s a fresh calculation from combined season totals (total earned runs ÷ total innings pitched × game length). Mistake 5 — Confusing ERA With RA (Run Average)

ERA counts only earned runs; RA (run average, sometimes called total run average) counts every run, earned or not, using the same innings-based formula. The two numbers will diverge more for a pitcher who’s played behind shakier defense. If a stat sheet doesn’t specify which one it’s showing, check whether it’s labeled ERA or RA before using it to compare pitchers — the two aren’t interchangeable even though they use the same formula structure.

Mistake 6 — Forgetting WHIP Uses the Same Actual-Innings Conversion

WHIP — (Walks + Hits) ÷ Innings Pitched — uses the same actual-innings figure as ERA, so the “.1”/“.2” notation mistake from Mistake 1 affects WHIP calculations exactly the same way. If you’ve correctly converted innings for ERA, reuse that same actual-innings figure for WHIP rather than re-deriving it (or re-making the same mistake) separately.
