ERA Calculator for Little League & Youth Coaches
ERA matters less to Little League and youth coaches than arm safety does — but tracking it alongside official pitch-count and rest-day rules gives a fuller picture of how a young pitcher’s workload is going. Here’s how to use the ERA calculator in a youth coaching context.
Step 1 — Know Your Division’s Game Length
Little League Majors Division (typically league age 9-12) plays 6-inning regular season games — not 7 or 9. Junior and Senior Little League divisions (older age groups) play 7-inning games, matching the calculator’s “7-inning” option. Most fastpitch softball also plays 7 innings.
The ERA calculator offers 9-inning and 7-inning game-length options built in. For a 6-inning league (Little League Majors and most Minors divisions), the calculator doesn’t have a built-in 6-inning toggle — instead, take the rate the calculator gives you at 9 innings and rescale it manually:
6-inning ERA = (9-inning ERA ÷ 9) × 6
Or compute it directly: ERA = (Earned Runs ÷ Actual Innings Pitched) × 6.
Step 2 — Track Pitch Counts Alongside ERA
Official Little League pitch-count limits by league age (regular season):

These limits exist independently of ERA or any performance stat — a pitcher can be having a great outing (low ERA-pace) and still need to come out purely because they’ve hit their daily pitch-count limit. Track pitch count as a hard rule, not something ERA overrides.
Step 3 — Apply Mandatory Rest Days
Pitch count also triggers mandatory rest before a pitcher’s next outing:

These figures apply to league age 14 and under; older divisions have similar but not identical thresholds — confirm the exact table for your specific division and season, since Little League updates these periodically.
Step 4 — Use ERA as a Development Signal, Not a Ranking
At the youth level, ERA swings wildly game to game because of small sample sizes, less consistent defense behind the pitcher, and wider talent gaps between opponents than at higher levels of play. Step 5 — Separate Earned Runs From the Final Score
Youth-level defense produces more errors than higher levels of play, which means the gap between total runs allowed and earned runs allowed is often larger for a Little League pitcher than for a high school or college pitcher. A Worked Example (6-Inning League)
A Little League Majors pitcher throws 4 innings + 2 outs (4.2 IP), allowing 3 earned runs, in a 6-inning game.
Actual IP = 4 + 2/3 = 4.667
ERA (6-inning scale) = (3 ÷ 4.667) × 6 = 3.86
