Common Plywood Buying & Installation Mistakes

Plywood mistakes tend to show up either at the checkout counter (buying the wrong grade or too few sheets) or months after installation (buckling, squeaks). Here are the ones that come up most often.

Mistake 1 — Using a 5-10% Waste Factor on a Complex Layout

The default waste factor works for a simple rectangular room, but layouts with many corners, angled walls, or lots of door and window cutouts generate proportionally more scrap. Sticking with a low waste factor on a complicated layout is one of the most common reasons a project runs short mid-job, forcing an inconvenient second store trip — often for a sheet from a different batch with a slightly different tone or thickness tolerance.

Mistake 2 — Buying Sanded Plywood for Hidden Structural Use

Mistake 3 — Confusing “Exterior” and “Exposure 1” Ratings

Exposure 1 panels are built to handle temporary moisture during construction, not permanent outdoor exposure — using Exposure 1 plywood for a permanently exposed outdoor structure risks premature bond failure. Conversely, defaulting to Exterior-rated plywood for ordinary interior structural work adds cost without a real benefit once the building is weathertight.

Mistake 4 — Ignoring the Span Rating Relative to Framing Spacing

A panel’s span rating specifies the maximum support spacing it’s designed for — using a panel rated for narrower spacing than the actual framing (installing 16-inch-rated subfloor panels over 24-inch-on-center joists, for example) risks excessive deflection and a bouncy or eventually failing floor. Always check the span rating against actual on-center framing spacing, not just panel thickness by feel.

Mistake 5 — Skipping the 1/8-Inch Expansion Gap Between Panels

Mistake 6 — Orienting Panels With the Strength Axis Parallel to Framing

Structural panels are engineered to span best with their long dimension (strength axis) running across framing members, not parallel to them. Installing panels the “wrong way” reduces effective span capacity even though the same span rating is printed on the sheet — this mistake isn’t visible until the floor or roof is under load.

Mistake 7 — Nailing Too Sparsely or Too Evenly

Using a single uniform nail spacing throughout, rather than the tighter 6-inch spacing APA recommends specifically at panel edges and ends (versus 12 inches in the field), under-secures exactly the areas most prone to lifting and squeaking over time.

Mistake 8 — Not Rounding Up to a Whole Sheet

Since suppliers sell whole sheets, a calculation landing at 9.1 or 9.5 sheets still requires a full 10th sheet — assuming a fractional result means “close enough” to the lower whole number leaves a project short by exactly the amount needed to finish.
