The Nailing Schedule
Per APA’s Builder Tips guidance, the standard fastening pattern for structural panels is:
6 inches on-center along panel ends and supported edges
12 inches on-center along intermediate framing (the field)
Fasteners placed 3/8 inch from panel edges

Why the 1/8-Inch Panel Gap Matters

Panel Orientation
Structural panels have a strength axis — typically the long dimension of the sheet — that should run perpendicular to (across) the framing members, not parallel to them, for panels used as sheathing or subfloor spanning multiple joists or studs. Installing panels with the strength axis running parallel to framing (the “wrong way”) reduces the panel’s effective span capacity, even if the same span rating is printed on the sheet.
Staggering Panel Joints
End joints between adjacent rows of panels should be staggered rather than lining up in a straight row — this distributes stress across the whole subfloor rather than concentrating it along one continuous seam line, which is more prone to flexing and eventual squeaking.
Gluing in Addition to Nailing (Recommended for Subfloor)
For subfloor specifically, using construction adhesive between the panel and joists, in addition to the nailing schedule above, is a common and recommended practice — the combination significantly reduces squeaking over time compared to nails alone, since the adhesive prevents the small amount of movement between panel and joist that causes nail-popping and squeaks under foot traffic.
