Plywood Sheet Count Worked Examples: 4 Project Types

Four worked examples: a simple rectangular subfloor, a complex layout with a higher waste factor, a large wall-sheathing job, and a small project using 5×5 sheets.

Example 1 — Simple Rectangular Subfloor

A 12 ft × 20 ft bedroom, standard 4×8 sheets (32 sq ft), 10% waste factor.

Area = 12 × 20 = 240 sq ft
Adjusted Area = 240 × 1.10 = 264 sq ft
Sheets Needed = ceil(264 ÷ 32) = ceil(8.25) = 9 sheets

A straightforward rectangle with no unusual cuts — the default 10% waste factor is appropriate here.

Example 2 — Complex Layout With Multiple Corners

An irregular 380 sq ft finished basement layout with several closets, an angled wall, and multiple door openings, using standard 4×8 sheets and a 18% waste factor to account for the extra cuts.

Adjusted Area = 380 × 1.18 = 448.4 sq ft
Sheets Needed = ceil(448.4 ÷ 32) = ceil(14.01) = 15 sheets

Compare this to what a default 10% factor would have produced: ceil(380 × 1.10 ÷ 32) = ceil(13.06) = 14 sheets — one sheet short of what the complex layout actually needs. Example 3 — Large Wall Sheathing Job

A 1,600 sq ft exterior wall sheathing job, using 4×8 sheets, 8% waste factor (simple rectangular wall runs with standard door/window openings).

Adjusted Area = 1,600 × 1.08 = 1,728 sq ft
Sheets Needed = ceil(1,728 ÷ 32) = 54 sheets

At this scale, even a small percentage change in waste factor moves the sheet count meaningfully — an extra 2% (10% instead of 8%) would add roughly one more sheet to the order, worth checking carefully on large jobs where sheet cost adds up fast.

Example 4 — Small Cabinet Project With 5×5 Sheets

A cabinet-building project needing 68 sq ft of sanded A-C plywood, using 5×5 sheets (25 sq ft) instead of standard 4×8, with a 15% waste factor to account for cabinet-piece cutting.

Adjusted Area = 68 × 1.15 = 78.2 sq ft
Sheets Needed = ceil(78.2 ÷ 25) = ceil(3.128) = 4 sheets
