Pool Volume Glossary: Average Depth, Freeboard & Shape Terms
Pool volume math uses a handful of terms that get glossed over in most quick-answer results. Here’s what each one means for the pool volume calculator.
Average Depth
The mathematical average of a pool’s shallow-end and deep-end water depth, used instead of either extreme to calculate total volume: (shallow depth + deep depth) ÷ 2. Since most residential pools taper from shallow to deep rather than holding one constant depth, average depth — not deep-end depth — is what actually determines total water volume.
Water Depth vs. Wall Height
Water depth is how deep the actual water is, measured from the surface to the pool floor. Wall height is the full height of the pool’s structure, from floor to the top edge. Pools are almost never filled all the way to the top of the wall, so using wall height instead of water depth will meaningfully overestimate volume — always measure the water itself.
Freeboard
The gap between the water’s surface and the top of the pool wall — the portion of wall height that’s intentionally left unfilled. Freeboard exists so that displacement from swimmers and wave action doesn’t cause water to spill over the edge; it’s the reason wall height and water depth are never the same number on a filled pool.
Footprint Area
The surface area of the pool as viewed from directly above — length × width for a rectangle, π × radius² for a circle, or length × width × 0.785 for an oval/elliptical pool. Footprint area gets multiplied by average depth to produce total volume in cubic feet, before converting to gallons.
Cubic Feet to Gallons Conversion
One cubic foot of water holds approximately 7.48 US gallons, commonly rounded to 7.5 for simpler pool-volume estimating. This rounding introduces a negligible ~0.3% difference — not enough to matter for chemical dosing or fill-time planning, which is why pool calculators (including the pool volume calculator) universally use the rounded 7.5 figure.
Sloped-Bottom vs. Flat-Bottom Pool
A sloped-bottom pool has a shallow end and a deep end connected by a graded floor — the vast majority of in-ground residential pools. A flat-bottom pool (common for many above-ground pools) holds one consistent depth throughout. Sloped-bottom pools require averaging two depth measurements; flat-bottom pools use a single depth directly.
