How to Measure an Irregular or Freeform Pool for Volume
Freeform, kidney-shaped, and L-shaped pools don’t fit the rectangular, round, or oval formulas directly — but breaking the shape into simpler sections gets you a usably accurate estimate.
Step 1 — Sketch the Pool From Above and Divide It Into Sections
Draw (or mentally map) the pool’s footprint from directly overhead, then divide it into two or three simple shapes that approximate the actual outline — usually some combination of rectangles, circles, and semicircles. A kidney-shaped pool, for example, often approximates well as two overlapping circles or a rectangle with rounded ends; an L-shaped pool splits cleanly into two rectangles.
Step 2 — Measure Each Section Separately
For each section, measure the dimensions needed for that shape’s formula — length and width for a rectangle, diameter for a circle or semicircle. Use the pool volume calculator once per section, selecting the shape that best matches that portion of the pool.
Step 3 — Use Consistent Depth Measurements Across Sections
If the pool has a single consistent depth (or a single shallow-to-deep slope) across the whole footprint, use the same average-depth figure for every section. If depth varies independently by section — for example, a shallow tanning ledge attached to a deeper main pool — measure and calculate each section’s depth separately, since using one blended depth across very different sections introduces meaningfully more error than splitting the shape does.
Step 4 — Add the Section Volumes Together

Step 5 — Sanity-Check Against a Reference Size

Step 6 — Accept Some Margin of Error
Sectioning an irregular shape into simple geometric approximations is inherently less precise than a true rectangular or round pool calculation — curved, freeform edges never match a rectangle or circle exactly. This is fine for most purposes (chemical dosing tolerates a reasonable margin of error), but for situations where precision genuinely matters — a structural or engineering context, for instance — a professional on-site measurement or your pool’s original builder specification will beat any section-based estimate.
When You Have the Original Spec
If your pool came with a manufacturer or installer-provided volume figure, that number reflects the actual as-built shape more precisely than any calculator-based estimate, sectioned or otherwise.
