Pool Volume Calculator for Chemical Dosing

Every pool chemical product label is written for a specific gallon count — almost always per 10,000 gallons. Getting your pool’s actual volume wrong means every dose that follows is wrong too, regardless of how carefully you measure the chemical itself.

Step 1 — Get an Accurate Gallon Count First

Before dosing anything, calculate your pool’s exact volume with the pool volume calculator, using water depth (not wall height) and average depth (not deep-end depth) for a sloped-bottom pool. Step 2 — Scale Any Product’s Label Dose to Your Actual Gallons

Once you have your real gallon figure, scale it against the product’s stated dose:

Your Dose = (Your Gallons ÷ 10,000) × Label's Per-10,000-Gallon Dose

Example: A pool holds 18,500 gallons, and a product’s label says “add 1 lb per 10,000 gallons”:

(18,500 ÷ 10,000) × 1 lb = 1.85 lb

Step 3 — Know the Common Chlorine Dosing Ranges

Different chlorine product types use different typical dosing rates per 10,000 gallons:

These are general industry ranges, not universal constants — always confirm the exact rate on your specific product’s label, since formulations and concentrations vary by brand.

Step 4 — Don’t Assume pH and Alkalinity Products Scale the Same Way

pH increaser/decreaser and alkalinity adjuster doses vary more by brand and starting water chemistry than chlorine doses do, and the amount needed depends on your current pH/alkalinity reading, not just your gallon count. Always follow the specific product’s label rate scaled to your actual gallons (using the Step 2 formula), retest after dosing, and adjust incrementally rather than dosing a large correction all at once.

Step 5 — Retest After Every Dose

Chemical dosing charts are starting points, not guarantees — water chemistry, temperature, sunlight (UV) exposure, and bather load all affect how a dose actually plays out. Test your water with a reliable test kit or strips after any chemical addition, and adjust the next dose based on the actual reading rather than assuming the calculated amount landed exactly on target.

Step 6 — Recheck Your Gallon Count If the Pool Changes
