How to Use This Calculator
- 1
Choose Project Income or Target Income mode
Project Income: enter your investment amount and see what income you'll generate over time. Target Income: enter your desired monthly or annual dividend income and see how many shares and what investment amount you need today.
- 2
Enter investment amount and monthly contribution
In Project Income mode, enter your starting investment and any monthly amount you'll add. The calculator converts dollars to shares at the current SCHD price and projects growth year by year.
- 3
Toggle DRIP on or off
With DRIP enabled, dividends automatically buy more shares each quarter. Over 10+ years, DRIP significantly increases both shares owned and future income. The results show DRIP vs. no-DRIP side by side.
- 4
Adjust assumptions if needed
Click 'Edit SCHD assumptions' to change share price, dividend per share, dividend growth rate, or price growth rate. Defaults use current SCHD data. Use conservative (7%) or optimistic (11%) dividend growth rates to see a range of outcomes.
What Each Value Means
- DRIP (Dividend Reinvestment) (shares added per quarter)
- Automatically reinvesting dividend payments to purchase additional shares instead of receiving cash. DRIP compounds returns by increasing share count each quarter. Over 20+ years, DRIP can more than double the final portfolio value and income compared to taking dividends as cash.
- Dividend Growth Rate (% per year)
- The annual percentage increase in dividend per share. SCHD's 10-year historical dividend CAGR is approximately 9.2-9.6%. This means the dividend per share grows each year, increasing income even without buying more shares. At 9% growth, dividends double approximately every 8 years.
- Yield on Cost (% of purchase price)
- Your effective dividend yield based on the original price you paid, not the current price. If you bought SCHD at $22/share and it now pays $1.06/share, your yield on cost is $1.06/$22 = 4.8%, even though the current yield (based on current price) is lower. Long-term DRIP investors see yield on cost grow significantly over time.
