Common Batting Average, OBP & OPS Calculation Mistakes
The formulas behind AVG, OBP, SLG, and OPS are simple arithmetic once the inputs are right — the errors almost always come from what gets counted (or left out) before the division happens. Here’s what to watch for.
Mistake 1 — Counting Walks or HBP as At-Bats
Walks and hit-by-pitches are plate appearances, not at-bats, and including them in the at-bat total understates batting average. A player with 35 hits, 100 at-bats, and 15 walks has an AVG of 35 ÷ 100 = .350, not 35 ÷ 115 = .304. This is one of the most common manual scoring errors, especially for a hitter who draws a lot of walks — the more walks a player has, the bigger this mistake distorts their AVG.
Mistake 2 — Forgetting Sacrifice Flies in the OBP Denominator
Sacrifice flies don’t count as at-bats, but they do belong in the OBP denominator, since a sacrifice fly is still an out (it just also happens to be productive). Leaving sacrifice flies out of the OBP formula entirely inflates OBP:
Correct: OBP = (H + BB + HBP) ÷ (AB + BB + HBP + SF)
Incorrect: OBP = (H + BB + HBP) ÷ (AB + BB + HBP) ← missing SF
For a line with 150 AB, 45 H, 20 BB, 3 HBP, and 4 SF, the correct OBP is (45+20+3) ÷ (150+20+3+4) = 68 ÷ 177 = .384. Dropping the sacrifice flies from the denominator instead gives 68 ÷ 173 = .393 — a real, noticeable overstatement for a hitter who racks up sacrifice flies over a season.
Mistake 3 — Averaging Averages Instead of Combining Raw Totals
Adding up two games’ batting averages and dividing by two does not produce the correct combined average unless both games had the exact same number of at-bats. A player who goes 3-for-3 (1.000) in one game and 0-for-7 (.000) across the next two games does not have a “combined” average of 0.500 — the correct combined average is (3+0) ÷ (3+7) = 3 ÷ 10 = .300. Mistake 4 — Confusing Total Bases With Total Hits in the SLG Formula
Slugging percentage uses total bases, not the raw hit count, in its numerator. A player with 10 hits made up of 6 singles, 2 doubles, 1 triple, and 1 home run does not have a SLG numerator of 10 — the correct total bases figure is 6 + (2×2) + (3×1) + (4×1) = 6+4+3+4 = 17. Plugging the raw hit total into the SLG formula instead of total bases will always understate a power hitter’s slugging percentage, since it throws away the extra weight that doubles, triples, and home runs are supposed to carry.
Mistake 5 — Overreacting to Small Sample Sizes
Early in a season (or after just a handful of games), a hot or cold stretch can produce a wildly misleading rate stat. A 3-for-5 game is technically a .600 average, but that single game means almost nothing about true talent level over a full season — the same is true of a 0-for-8 stretch producing a temporary .000. Rate stats become meaningful once at-bat totals climb into the dozens or hundreds; treat single-game or single-week numbers as noise, not signal.
Mistake 6 — Comparing Numbers Across Different Levels of Competition
A .500 youth batting average and a .500 MLB batting average represent completely different levels of hitting skill, because pitching quality, defense, and bat type differ enormously by level. Comparing a player’s raw AVG, OBP, or OPS against a number posted at a different level of play — instead of against benchmarks for their own level — produces a misleading read on how good that season actually was. The Fix
Keep walks, HBP, and sacrifice flies out of the at-bat count but include sacrifice flies in the OBP denominator specifically, sum raw totals across games rather than averaging individual game averages, use total bases (not hit count) in the SLG numerator, treat small samples skeptically, and always compare against benchmarks for the right level of play.
