What's a Good Batting Average? By Level, Youth to MLB

“Good” batting average numbers are not a fixed target — they shift dramatically depending on the level of competition. A .500 average that’s completely normal in 9-year-old rec ball would be a legendary, unrepeatable MLB season. Here’s how the benchmarks change level by level, using the same AVG, OBP, and SLG math the batting average calculator runs.

Why the Bar Moves So Much Between Levels

Batting average is a contest between hitter and pitcher, and both sides of that contest get dramatically better as players advance. Pitching velocity and command improve, fielders make fewer errors, outfields get deeper (more fly balls get caught instead of dropping for hits), and — starting around the college level — the bats switch from aluminum to wood, which is far less forgiving of mishits. None of that means a player is getting worse; it means the competition is getting tougher, so the same swing produces a lower average against better pitching.

MLB’s league-wide batting average has generally sat in the .240–.260 range in recent seasons — hitting .300 for a full season is a real accomplishment, typically managed by only a small handful of qualified hitters leaguewide in any given year.

College pitching is a meaningful step up from high school, but hitters are also using metal bats (BBCOR-certified, which perform closer to wood than older aluminum bats but still outperform true wood), which keeps D1 averages noticeably higher than MLB’s.

High school pitching varies enormously by region and program, so a .400 average at one school and a .400 average at another aren’t always directly comparable — team and league strength matters more at this level than at any level above it.

Youth averages run the highest of any level for the same reasons pitching and defense are still developing: more walks turn into pitches actually put in play, more grounders sneak through infields still learning to field cleanly, and more fly balls drop instead of getting caught. Don’t be alarmed by a batting average that looks like it “drops” as a player moves up an age bracket or into high school — it’s the expected, normal result of facing better competition, not a sign of regression.

OBP and OPS Benchmarks Shift Too — Not Just AVG

It’s tempting to only track batting average, but OBP and OPS scale with level the same way AVG does. A youth player’s high OBP is partly inflated by pitchers who haven’t yet developed strike-zone command, producing more walks than a similarly patient hitter would draw against college or pro pitching.
