Batting Average Calculator Examples: 3 Player Profiles
The same four formulas produce very different-looking stat lines depending on a hitter’s profile. The three examples below run real stat lines through the same math the batting average calculator computes automatically.
Profile 1 — The Contact Hitter
550 AB, 187 H, 45 BB, 3 HBP, 4 SF, 28 2B, 4 3B, 8 HR
A high-average, low-power hitter who puts the bat on the ball often but doesn’t hit for much extra-base power.
AVG = 187 ÷ 550 = .340
OBP = (187 + 45 + 3) ÷ (550 + 45 + 3 + 4)
= 235 ÷ 602 = .390
Singles = 187 − 28 − 4 − 8 = 147
Total Bases = 147 + (2×28) + (3×4) + (4×8) = 147 + 56 + 12 + 32 = 247
SLG = 247 ÷ 550 = .449
OPS = .390 + .449 = .839

Profile 2 — The Power Hitter
480 AB, 132 H, 55 BB, 2 HBP, 3 SF, 22 2B, 1 3B, 35 HR
A lower batting average but far more extra-base power — the classic profile of a slugger who trades contact rate for damage on contact.
AVG = 132 ÷ 480 = .275
OBP = (132 + 55 + 2) ÷ (480 + 55 + 2 + 3)
= 189 ÷ 540 = .350
Singles = 132 − 22 − 1 − 35 = 74
Total Bases = 74 + (2×22) + (3×1) + (4×35) = 74 + 44 + 3 + 140 = 261
SLG = 261 ÷ 480 = .544
OPS = .350 + .544 = .894
Despite a batting average 65 points lower than the contact hitter above, this profile posts a nearly identical OPS (.894 vs .839) — a clear illustration of why OPS is generally considered a better single-number gauge of offensive value than AVG alone. Both hitters contribute similarly overall; they just get there in different ways.
Profile 3 — The High-OBP, Low-Power Hitter
500 AB, 140 H, 90 BB, 5 HBP, 2 SF, 18 2B, 2 3B, 6 HR
A patient hitter who rarely chases pitches out of the zone, drawing far more walks than either profile above while hitting for modest power.
AVG = 140 ÷ 500 = .280
OBP = (140 + 90 + 5) ÷ (500 + 90 + 5 + 2)
= 235 ÷ 597 = .394
Singles = 140 − 18 − 2 − 6 = 114
Total Bases = 114 + (2×18) + (3×2) + (4×6) = 114 + 36 + 6 + 24 = 180
SLG = 180 ÷ 500 = .360
OPS = .394 + .360 = .754
This hitter’s OBP (.394) is dramatically higher than their AVG (.280) — a 114-point gap driven almost entirely by 90 walks. A team relying purely on batting average would underrate this player badly; OBP and OPS tell the fuller story of how often they actually reach base and contribute.

No MLB hitter has reached .400 for a full season since Ted Williams in 1941 — a useful reminder that even the .340 contact-hitter profile above, a genuinely excellent modern season, still sits well below what the game’s all-time greats once produced against far less specialized pitching.
