CMU Sizes, Coverage, and Mortar Requirements

Nominal vs Actual CMU Dimensions

CMU dimensions are specified as nominal — the actual block is 3/8 inch smaller in each dimension to accommodate a standard mortar joint. The nominal dimension assumes a 3/8-inch joint is included.

All blocks with a nominal 8×16 face have identical block coverage (blocks per square foot) regardless of thickness — thickness only affects structural capacity, insulation, and weight.

Coverage Formula

With a given mortar joint size j (inches):

effectiveH = (nomH - 0.375) + j
effectiveL = (nomL - 0.375) + j
blocksPerSqFt = 144 / (effectiveH × effectiveL)

The standard 3/8-inch joint gives the clean nominal dimensions (8×16 = 128 sq in = 0.889 sq ft/block).

Mortar Quantities

For 80 lb pre-mixed mortar bags:

If mixing from scratch (Type S masonry mortar):

  • 1 bag masonry cement (70 lb) + 2.25 to 3 bags sand (60 lb each) per 40–50 blocks
  • Type S: 1 part Portland cement : 0.5 part lime : 4.5 parts sand

Grout for Reinforced Walls

For hollow-core CMU walls with vertical rebar (filled cores):

  • Standard 8-inch block: approximately 0.25–0.30 cubic feet of grout per block per filled core
  • 1 bag (80 lb) coarse grout: fills approximately 4–5 standard 8-inch block cores
  • Partially grouted walls (every other core): approximately 0.15 cu ft per block

Normal weight = gravel aggregate; light weight = expanded clay/shale aggregate. Light weight blocks cost more but are easier to lay and provide better insulation.
