DOTS Score Benchmarks by Weight Class: Beginner to Elite

The Key Insight: DOTS Is Weight-Class Neutral

Unlike Wilks (which historically favored 82–100 kg lifters), DOTS produces benchmarks that mean the same thing at every bodyweight. A DOTS score of 350 represents the same relative achievement for a 59 kg lifter as it does for a 120 kg lifter — the denominator scales with bodyweight.

This means one table of DOTS tiers applies to all weight classes, male or female:

TierMale DOTSFemale DOTSCompetition Context
Beginner< 200< 150First 6–12 months of training
Novice200–299150–199Gym PRs, first local meets
Intermediate300–399200–299Competitive at local meets (320–380 typical)
Advanced400–499300–399Regional/national competitive
Elite500–549400–449National podium level

Calculate your score with the DOTS Calculator, then use the tables below to see the raw totals required at your specific bodyweight.

Male Benchmarks: Raw Total Required for Each Tier

What “Competitive” Looks Like in Practice

Competition data from USAPL meets shows these typical ranges for lifters who place in the top half of their weight class:

Male:

  • Local meets: 320–400 DOTS (competitive 350+ for a podium shot in most classes)
  • State championships: 380–440 DOTS typical finalist range
  • Nationals: 420–480 DOTS for top-10 finishers
  • American records: typically 550–620 DOTS in most weight classes

Female:

  • Local meets: 250–330 DOTS
  • State championships: 310–370 DOTS typical finalist range
  • Nationals: 360–420 DOTS for top-10
  • American records: 450–520 DOTS range in most weight classes

John Haack’s back-to-back record runs and Engelbrecht’s 2025 record demonstrate that the absolute ceiling for the sport hovers around 680–700 DOTS — approached by fewer than a handful of lifters in recorded history.

How to Use These Benchmarks

  1. Calculate your DOTS at the DOTS Calculator
  2. Find your weight class table above
  3. Identify which tier your current total falls in
  4. Read the raw total gap to the next tier
  5. Distribute that gap across S/B/D using the DOTS Goal-Setting Guide

For RPE-based training to close the gap, see the RPE Calculator. For planning individual session warmup progressions at your target weights, use the Warmup Calculator.
