Mistake 1 — Assuming the Combined Multiplier Is a Simple Average

This is the most common misconception: treating the combined multiplier as a plain average of the distinct ore multipliers present, ignoring how much of each ore was actually used. The real formula is quantity-weighted — Σ(multiplier × quantity) ÷ total quantity — so using 90% of one ore and 10% of another produces a very different result than an even 50/50 split, even with the exact same two ores. Mistake 2 — Treating Quantity as Optional

Because the multiplier field alone doesn’t determine the result, some players skip entering quantity or treat it as a minor detail only relevant to trait checking. Quantity is required for an accurate combined multiplier — without it, there’s no way to know how much weight each ore’s multiplier should carry in the average.

Mistake 3 — Using Stale Ore Multiplier Values

The Forge is an actively updated game — ore multipliers can shift between updates, and entirely new ores (and worlds) get added periodically. Reusing multiplier values from a previous session, an old wiki screenshot, or a video from several updates ago can produce a combined multiplier that no longer matches what the game actually applies. Always confirm current multiplier values in-game or on an up-to-date community wiki immediately before forging.

Mistake 4 — Confusing the 10% and 30% Trait Thresholds

A traited ore needs at least 10% of total quantity for the trait to appear at all, but the commonly cited optimal (strongest) version of the effect needs 30% or more. Assuming that clearing 10% automatically gives the full trait effect — or conversely, using far more than 30% “to be safe” without checking the multiplier cost — both lead to a worse outcome than necessary. Mistake 5 — Forgetting the 4-Ore Slot Limit

Only up to 4 distinct ore types can be combined in a single forge. Planning a build around 5 or more distinct ores isn’t possible in a single crafting attempt — if a build needs more than 4 distinct traits or multiplier sources, it has to be split across separate forges rather than combined into one.

Mistake 6 — Assuming More Ore Types Always Helps

Adding an extra ore type to a mix doesn’t automatically improve the result — if the added ore has a lower multiplier than what’s already in the forge, it pulls the combined multiplier down, and it dilutes the quantity share of any traited ore already present. Every additional ore should serve a specific purpose (raising the multiplier or hitting a trait threshold), not just be included because it’s available.

Mistake 7 — Not Testing Before Committing Rare Ore

Manually estimating a combined multiplier or trait share in your head is easy to get wrong, especially with uneven quantities across 3-4 ore types.
