How to Hit Trait Thresholds Without Sacrificing Multiplier
Getting a trait onto a forged item requires a meaningful share of a traited ore — but every unit of that ore also shifts your combined multiplier. Here’s how to find the smallest quantity that clears the threshold without giving up more multiplier than necessary.
Step 1 — Know the Two Thresholds
A trait needs at least 10% of total ore quantity to appear at all, and 30% or more for the commonly cited optimal (strongest) version of the effect. Below 10%, the trait doesn’t show up on the item regardless of how good the traited ore’s multiplier is. See the forging terms glossary for the exact trait share formula.
Step 2 — Work Backward From the Threshold to a Quantity
If you know your total ore quantity, the minimum traited-ore quantity needed for each threshold is:
Minimum quantity for 10% (present) = Total Quantity × 0.10
Minimum quantity for 30% (optimal) = Total Quantity × 0.30
Example: Forging with 40 total ore quantity — you need at least 4 units of a traited ore for the trait to appear, and at least 12 units for the optimal 30%+ version.
Step 3 — Use the Smallest Quantity That Clears Your Target Threshold
Since the combined multiplier is quantity-weighted, using more of a traited ore than strictly necessary shifts the multiplier further toward that ore’s value — which helps if the traited ore also has a high multiplier, but hurts if it doesn’t. If your goal is the optimal 30% trait effect and nothing more, use exactly (or just above) 30% rather than a larger share, to minimize the multiplier impact if the traited ore’s own multiplier is lower than your other ores.
Step 4 — A Worked Example
Forging with a 3x-multiplier ore as your main ore and a 1.2x-multiplier traited ore, targeting the 30% optimal trait threshold, using 20 total quantity:
Traited ore quantity needed (30%) = 20 × 0.30 = 6 units
Main ore quantity = 20 − 6 = 14 units
Combined multiplier = (14×3 + 6×1.2) ÷ 20 = (42 + 7.2) ÷ 20 = 2.46x
Compare that to using 50% traited ore instead of the minimum 30%:
Traited ore quantity = 10 units, Main ore = 10 units
Combined multiplier = (10×3 + 10×1.2) ÷ 20 = (30 + 12) ÷ 20 = 2.10x
Using exactly the 30% minimum instead of 50% keeps the combined multiplier noticeably higher (2.46x vs. 2.10x) while still securing the full optimal trait effect — extra traited-ore quantity beyond the threshold you’re targeting has a real multiplier cost if that ore’s own multiplier is lower than your main ore’s.
Step 5 — Flip the Math If the Traited Ore Has the Higher Multiplier
If the traited ore actually has a higher multiplier than your other ores, this logic reverses — using more of it (well beyond the 30% threshold) helps both the trait effect and the combined multiplier at the same time, so there’s no real tradeoff to manage in that case.
