Four of these produce a number that is too low. The fifth produces unnecessary panic about a number that was fine. All five come from the same root: treating a community estimate as a published rule.

1. Treating the baseline as an exact threshold

“Long needs 1,200” is a useful shorthand and a poor rule. It is a figure aggregated from player testing, standing in for a range that nobody publishes — not a value the game checks your stat against.

The practical consequence: 1,190 and 1,210 are not different outcomes. If you are within a few dozen points either side of a baseline, you are inside the noise of the estimate itself. Optimising to the point is optimising against precision that does not exist.

2. Forgetting the running style penalty

Front Runner and Pace Chaser need roughly 5% more than the table shows, because they spend more of the race at high effort near the front and convert stamina into usable energy less efficiently.

On a Long race that is 60 points — enough to move a character from adequate to marginal without anything else changing. It is easy to miss because the baseline table is the thing people memorise, and the multiplier is not part of it.

3. Assuming recovery skills are a nice-to-have

They are the largest single lever available. Modelled as a 25% reduction, a recovery skill takes a Long-race Front Runner requirement from 1,260 to 945.

Compare that to a style change, which saves 60. Recovery is worth roughly five times as much, and on the distances where stamina is hardest to satisfy the gap is widest. 4. Ignoring the stat assumptions behind the baselines

The baselines assume roughly 1200 Speed, 1200 Power, 600 Wit, and a track with no downhill sections.

A character well outside that profile is not described by these numbers. Higher speed generally means more stamina drain; downhill sections reduce it. The calculator cannot see either, so it silently assumes the reference profile — and quietly stops applying to a build that has moved a long way from it.

This is the mistake that is hardest to notice, because nothing in the output signals it.

5. Reading a small shortfall as certain failure

The opposite error, and a genuine waste of training.

Being slightly under a baseline is not automatically disastrous, particularly with a favourable running style, recovery skills, or a track with downhill sections. A margin of −20 is a flag, not a verdict. A margin of −300 is a real problem.

The bands in reading your stamina result exist for exactly this reason: the size of the shortfall carries the information, not its sign.
