Stamina Stat vs Recovery Skills: Closing the Gap

Bar comparison for a Long race Front Runner showing 1260 required with no recovery, 1200 after a style switch saving 60, 945 with recovery skills saving 315, and 900 with both saving 360
On a Long race, recovery skills are worth roughly five times a style change — 315 points against 60. The style penalty is a 5% adjustment; recovery is modelled as 25%. Calculated from the 1,200 Long baseline with the ×1.05 style and ×0.75 recovery adjustments.

If the Uma Musume stamina calculator says you are short, there are three ways to respond. They are not close to equivalent.

The comparison, on a Long race

A Front Runner facing a Long race. Baseline 1,200, style multiplier 1.05:

ApproachRequirementSaves
Front Runner, no recovery1,260
Switch to Late Surger1,20060
Keep Front Runner, add recovery945315
Late Surger + recovery900360

Recovery skills are worth roughly five times a style change. That is not a judgement call — it falls directly out of the model, where the style penalty is a 5% adjustment and recovery is a 25% reduction.

Why recovery does more

The two adjustments describe different things.

The style penalty reflects that Front Runners and Pace Chasers spend more of the race at high effort near the front, converting stamina into usable energy less efficiently. It is a modest, structural inefficiency — hence 5%.

Recovery skills restore stamina during the race. That changes the shape of the problem: instead of needing the whole amount banked before the start, you top up as you go. Offsetting drain mid-race is simply a bigger effect than being slightly more efficient with what you started with.

When each lever is the right call

Add a recovery skill when:

  • You are on a Long or Medium race, where the absolute saving is largest
  • The shortfall is more than about 100
  • You have skill capacity to spare

Train the Stamina stat when:

  • The shortfall persists even with recovery accounted for
  • You are building for several races at the same distance
  • You have training capacity that is not competing with a more binding need

Stamina training is reliable and boring. It always works, and every point spent is a point not spent on Speed or Power — so past the adequate band the return falls away fast. Reading your stamina result covers where that band sits.

Change running style when:

  • The style suits the character for other reasons anyway
  • You are within about 60 of the requirement, where 5% is enough on its own

Do not force a style change purely for stamina. On a Sprint the entire penalty is 25 points; on a Long it is 60. If you are 300 short, restyling is not the answer.

Distance changes the arithmetic

The saving from recovery scales with the baseline, so the same 25% is worth very different amounts:

DistanceRequirement (LS/EC)With recoverySaving
Sprint500375125
Mile800600200
Medium900675225
Long1,200900300

On a Sprint, 125 points is often not worth a skill slot that could hold something else. On a Long, 300 points is usually the difference between viable and not.

Recovery skills matter most exactly where stamina is hardest to satisfy.

The caveat that applies to all of it

The 5% and 25% figures are community estimates, not published values. They are consistent, they are widely used, and they are the basis of every number above — but they carry error bars nobody can quantify precisely.

That does not make the comparison useless. The ordering is robust even if the exact figures shift: recovery is a larger effect than style, and the gap between them is wide enough that a modest error in either estimate does not reverse it. Where those numbers come from is set out in why Uma Musume stamina has no exact formula.

Short version

Long race and short on stamina? Recovery skill first. Then stamina training. Change style only if it suits the character anyway. And if you are still 300 short after all three, race a shorter distance — that is a real answer, not a concession.
