The honest answer to “what is the stamina formula?” is that there is not one you can write on a line — and the reason is more interesting than the absence.

What the game actually models

Stamina consumption in Uma Musume depends on speed, distance, the phase of the race, track conditions, and how skills interact with each other. Those factors do not combine into a tidy closed form. They interact.

This is why serious community tools simulate races computationally rather than solving an equation. A simulator steps through a race and accumulates the result. That is not a workaround for missing information — it is the appropriate tool for a system where the answer depends on the path taken, not just the starting values.

The developers have not published the internal model in a simple form. That is unremarkable for a live game.

How a baseline gets built

The figures on the Uma Musume stamina calculator — 500, 800, 900, 1,200 — sit at the end of a chain:

  1. The game’s internal model. Complex, interacting, unpublished.
  2. Race simulators. Community tools reproduce it computationally.
  3. Aggregated player testing. Many races, many builds, results pooled and compared.
  4. A single baseline figure. One number standing in for all of the above.

No step is wrong. The compression is the point. A single number cannot carry the conditions it was measured under, so what you end up with is a midpoint of a range that nobody publishes.

The baselines assume roughly 1200 Speed, 1200 Power, 600 Wit, and no downhill sections. Every one of those is doing work:

  • Speed affects drain. A much faster character burns stamina differently.
  • Downhill sections reduce drain, and tracks vary.
  • Wit affects skill activation, which affects whether your recovery skill fires when you need it.

So how much should you trust it?

Enough to answer the question it is built for: is stamina roughly adequate for this distance?

Not enough to:

  • Distinguish 1,190 from 1,210
  • Predict a race outcome
  • Tune a build to the point
  • Override what you observe in actual races

The 5% style penalty and the 25% recovery reduction carry the same caveat. They are consistent and widely used, but they are estimates.

Here is the useful part: the ordering survives the uncertainty even when the exact figures do not. Recovery skills being a bigger lever than a style change is robust — the gap is 315 against 60 on a Long race, wide enough that a sizeable error in either estimate would not reverse it. Conclusions that depend on the relationship between numbers hold up far better than conclusions that depend on their exact values. Why an approximate tool is still worth having

Because the alternative is not a better number — it is no number.

Without a baseline you are guessing whether 700 stamina is remotely reasonable for a Mile. All three of those are actionable, and none of them require the figure to be exact.

If you want more precision

The trade is deliberate. This tool answers one question in a few seconds. A simulator answers a harder question slowly. Both are legitimate; they are just not the same tool, and reaching for the fast one and then demanding simulator-grade precision from it is where the frustration comes from.
