Path of Exile Socket Crafting Glossary
Use this glossary alongside the Vorici Calculator when a term from a build guide or crafting discussion isn’t clear.
Bench Craft
A guaranteed crafting option available at Vorici’s crafting bench (unlocked via master missions) that forces a specific number of sockets to a chosen color for a fixed Chromatic Orb cost, rather than relying on random rolling. Available tiers guarantee 1, 2, or 3 sockets of a chosen color.
Chromatic Orb
A currency item used to re-roll the colors of all sockets on an item simultaneously. Each socket’s resulting color depends on the item’s attribute requirements — the orb itself doesn’t target specific colors, it re-rolls the whole item’s sockets at once based on probability.
Expected Cost
The average number of Chromatic Orbs needed across many random-roll attempts to hit a target configuration, calculated as 1 divided by the probability of success on a single roll. Because outcomes follow a geometric distribution, actual results vary widely around this average — see percentile below.
Multinomial Probability
The statistical formula used to calculate the chance of a specific combination of socket colors appearing simultaneously across multiple sockets, accounting for all the different orderings that produce the same color count. Used to compute the probability of a full target configuration (e.g., exactly 2 Red, 1 Green, 3 Blue) on a chromatic roll. See the chromatic orb probability formula for the full derivation.
Off-Color Socket
A socket color that doesn’t match an item’s dominant attribute requirement — for example, a Blue socket on a high-Strength item. Off-color sockets have lower per-roll probability and are more expensive to obtain through random rolling, often making the Vorici bench the more efficient method.
On-Color Socket
A socket color that matches (or is favored by) an item’s attribute requirements — for example, a Red socket on a high-Strength item. On-color sockets have high per-roll probability and are typically cheap to obtain through random chromatic rolling.
Percentile (90th / 99th)
A measure of how much currency is needed to succeed at a given confidence level, accounting for the variance inherent in random rolling. The 90th percentile is the cost at which 90% of attempts will have already succeeded; the 99th percentile covers all but the unluckiest 1% of outcomes. Used for budgeting beyond just the average expected cost.
Vorici
A crafting NPC (master) in Path of Exile whose crafting bench provides guaranteed socket-coloring options. Unlocking Vorici’s bench recipes is one of the most valuable early-league crafting investments for any build needing off-color sockets.
