Men’s Casual Tops (T-shirts, Sweaters, Casual Shirts)

Sized by chest measurement:

Men’s Dress Shirts

Dress shirts use neck size (collar) and sleeve length instead of chest-based letter sizes:

Neck (in)Neck (cm)US/UK CollarApproximate Letter
14–14.535.5–3714 / 14½S
15–15.538–39.515 / 15½M
16–16.540.6–4216 / 16½L
17–17.543–44.517 / 17½XL
18–18.545.7–4718 / 18½XXL

Sleeve length: Standard US sleeve lengths are 32–33 (short), 34–35 (regular), 36–37 (long/tall). EU dress shirts use arm length in cm (sleeve from center back to wrist).

How to measure neck: Wrap tape around the base of the neck (where the collar sits), 2 fingers loose. Add 0.5” to the measurement — that’s your collar size.

Men’s Trousers

Trousers are sized by waist × inseam (e.g., 34 × 32):

Waist (in)Approximate LetterEU
28–30S44–46
30–32M46–48
32–34M–L48–50
34–36L50–52
36–38XL52–54
40–42XXL56–58

Inseam lengths:

  • Short: 28–29”
  • Regular: 30–32”
  • Long: 33–34” (most common US standard)
  • X-Long: 35–36” (tall sizing)

EU trouser sizing: Some European brands label trousers with a single EU number that corresponds to the waist measurement in cm. EU 50 trousers ≈ 34–36” waist. For the full US/UK/EU numeric conversion table, see US vs UK vs EU Clothing Sizes.

Men’s Suits

US and UK suit sizes use the chest measurement directly:

US / UK Suit SizeChest (in)EU SuitBody Type Suffix
363646R (regular), S (short), L (long)
383848R / S / L
404050R / S / L
424252R / S / L
444454R / S / L
464656R / S / L
484858R / S / L

R/S/L suffixes:

  • R (Regular): Most men 5’9”–6’0”
  • S (Short): Men 5’7” and under
  • L (Long): Men 6’1”–6’3”
  • XL (Extra Long): Men 6’4” and taller

Trouser size for a suit is typically chest size − 6 inches (e.g., a 40R suit → 34” trousers). Trousers can be altered at the waist.

Men’s Outerwear (Coats, Jackets)

Outerwear follows the same letter/EU sizing as casual tops, but sized 1–2 inches larger to accommodate layering:

A man who wears a size L shirt typically wears a size L or XL jacket, depending on:

  • Whether he wears a suit jacket underneath
  • Jacket cut (slim fit runs smaller)
  • Brand (European brands run smaller — especially Italian and Spanish labels)

How Fit Styles Affect Sizing

Modern menswear offers three fit categories, and they change how you size:

FitChestWaistNotes
Slim / SkinnyClose to bodyTaperedSize up if between sizes
Regular / ClassicStandard easeStraightMost common; standard chart applies
Relaxed / AthleticExtra room in chest/shoulderMore room in hips/thighsSize down if between sizes

For athletic builds (wide shoulders, narrow waist): chest usually determines size for shirts. Trousers may need waist alteration.
