How to Choose Cross Stitch Fabric Count for Your Project
Updated: May 26, 2026
The Single Most Important Factor: Finished Size
The most practical reason to choose one count over another is the finished size of your project.
Lower count = larger finished piece. Higher count = smaller finished piece.
Same 140×100 stitch pattern on different fabrics:
| Fabric | Finished Width | Finished Height |
|---|---|---|
| 11-count Aida | 12.7” (32.3 cm) | 9.1” (23.1 cm) |
| 14-count Aida | 10” (25.4 cm) | 7.1” (18.1 cm) |
| 18-count Aida | 7.8” (19.8 cm) | 5.6” (14.2 cm) |
| 28-count Linen over 2 | 10” (25.4 cm) | 7.1” (18.1 cm) |
Use the Cross Stitch Calculator to see the exact finished size for any count before buying fabric.
Choosing by Experience Level
Absolute Beginner: 14-count Aida
14-count Aida is the standard starting point. The holes are large enough to see clearly, the grid is well-defined, and every major pattern supplier designs for 14-count by default. Stitching with 2 strands of DMC floss.
Avoid 11-count for your first project — despite being labeled “beginner friendly” for its larger stitches, the holes are so large they can be harder to control tension consistently.
Avoid linen until you’ve completed at least one Aida project. Counting threads (not holes) requires experience.
Comfortable Stitcher: 16-count or 18-count Aida
Once you’re comfortable with tension and counting, try 16-count or 18-count for more detail. The smaller stitch size means designs look finer and more detailed — but the same pattern comes out smaller.
If you want the same finished size as 14-count but more detail, choose a pattern with a higher stitch count instead of changing count.
Experienced Stitcher: 28-count Linen or Evenweave
28-count linen stitched over 2 produces the same stitch size as 14-count Aida but with a much more polished look. The thread-counting technique requires accuracy. To switch between counts or find what count gives a desired finished size, see How to Resize a Cross Stitch Pattern.
32-count linen (over 2 = 16 effective) and 36-count (over 2 = 18 effective) offer progressively finer results.
Choosing by Project Type
Beginner Kits and Samplers
→ 14-count Aida. Most kits include 14-count.
Children’s Projects
→ 11-count Aida. Large stitches are easier for small hands and early learners.
Greeting Cards and Small Ornaments
→ 18-count Aida or 28-count linen over 2. Small stitch size fits more detail in a small area.
- A 4”×4” ornament frame: use 18-count to fit up to 72×72 stitches.
Wall Art and Large Hangings
→ 14-count Aida (large format) or 28-count linen over 2 for a premium look.
- Large pieces benefit from linen’s softer drape when mounted.
Gift or Heirloom Pieces
→ 28-count linen or 32-count linen. Natural fibre ages beautifully. The finished piece looks significantly higher quality than Aida.
Miniatures and Framed Portraits
→ 18-count or 22-count Aida, or 32-count or 36-count linen over 2.
- Higher counts capture facial detail and fine shading in portraits.
Bookmarks and Kitchen Linens
→ Aida band fabric (pre-cut strips with decorative edging) at 14 or 18-count, or plain 14-count Aida cut to size.
What the Pattern Tells You
Most patterns include a recommended fabric count and the resulting finished size. Look for a section like:
“Stitch Count: 140w × 100h. Design Size on 14-ct: 10” × 7.14""
If the design size on 14-count is too large or too small for your intended use, choose a different count and recalculate. The Cross Stitch Calculator handles this instantly — enter your stitch count and choose any fabric to see the new size.
