How to Resize a Cross Stitch Pattern to Any Fabric Count
Updated: May 26, 2026
Why Resize a Pattern?
You might want to resize when:
- The pattern is designed for 14-count but you want a smaller piece for a card or ornament
- You want the same design larger for a framed wall piece
- You have a specific fabric in stock and want to know the finished size before starting
- You found a pattern you love but it would be too large for the frame you already own
Good news: the stitch count never changes. Resizing only changes the fabric count — the number of stitches per inch — which scales the finished size up or down.
The Resize Formula
There are two directions you can resize:
Direction 1: Change fabric count → calculate new finished size
New finished size = Stitch count ÷ New fabric count
Direction 2: Have a desired finished size → calculate the fabric count needed
Required fabric count = Stitch count ÷ Desired size (inches)
Once you find the required count, choose the closest standard fabric count that produces the size you want.
Worked Examples
Example 1: Pattern on 14-count, Want It Smaller
Pattern: 140w × 100h stitches (designed for 14-count, finishes at 10” × 7.14”)
You want it to fit in a 5” × 7” frame (finished design ≤ 5” wide).
Required count = 140 ÷ 5 = 28
28-count fabric (stitched over 1) would give exactly 5” × 3.57”. But 28-count is a linen count, and stitching over 1 on linen is unusual. Instead:
- Try 18-count Aida: 140 ÷ 18 = 7.78” wide → still too wide for 5” frame
- Try 22-count Aida: 140 ÷ 22 = 6.36” → closer but still over 5”
- Try 28-count Aida (if available) or 32-count linen over 2 (16 effective): 140 ÷ 16 = 8.75” → nope
Actually the math says you need 28-count effective:
- Use 28-count linen stitched over 1 (unusual but possible for very fine work): 5” × 3.57”
- Or accept 18-count (7.78” × 5.56”) and choose a frame that fits
Lesson: Not every target size is achievable with a standard fabric count. The calculator helps you find the closest option.
Example 2: Pattern on 18-count, Want It Bigger
Pattern: 72w × 72h stitches (designed for 18-count, finishes at 4” × 4”)
You want it as a large wall decoration, roughly 12” × 12”.
Required count = 72 ÷ 12 = 6
6-count doesn’t exist in standard cross stitch. Options:
- 11-count Aida: 72 ÷ 11 = 6.5” × 6.5” — bigger, but not 12”
- 14-count Aida: 72 ÷ 14 = 5.1” — smaller than original
The problem: A small stitch count (72×72 = 5,184 stitches) cannot scale to 12” on any standard fabric. The design is too simple.
Solution: Find a larger version of the same pattern (more stitches, same design) or use the 11-count result (6.5” × 6.5”) and use a larger frame with a mat board.
Example 3: Moving from Aida to Linen (Same Size)
Pattern: 140w × 100h on 14-count Aida → 10” × 7.14”
You want the same finished size on linen.
Effective count needed = 14
Linen count (over 2) = 14 × 2 = 28-count linen
28-count linen stitched over 2 produces exactly the same finished size as 14-count Aida. Same stitch count, same dimensions, same number of floss skeins needed. Different fabric look only. For the full Aida vs linen comparison including appearance and price, see Aida vs Linen for Cross Stitch.
Quick Reference: Standard Count Conversions
| If pattern is for… | To get same size on linen | To get smaller (same stitch count) |
|---|---|---|
| 11-count Aida | 22-count linen over 2 | 14-count Aida |
| 14-count Aida | 28-count linen over 2 | 18-count Aida — then check fabric size for framing |
| 16-count Aida | 32-count linen over 2 | 22-count Aida |
| 18-count Aida | 36-count linen over 2 | Use higher stitch count |
Using the Calculator
The Cross Stitch Calculator handles all this instantly:
To see new finished size after changing count: → Fabric Size tab → enter your stitch count → change the fabric dropdown → size updates instantly
To find required count for a desired size: → Stitch Count tab → enter your desired finished dimensions → get stitch count → compare back against your pattern’s actual stitch count to see if it matches
For linen resizing: → Enter the linen count → set “Stitch Over” to 2 → the effective count shows automatically
