Reverse Tax Calculation Examples by Country and State
How to Read These Examples
Every example uses the same formula: Pre-tax = Total ÷ (1 + rate), then Tax = Total − Pre-tax. Only the rate and whether the tax is added at checkout (US) or already included in the displayed price (VAT/GST) changes. Run any of these through the Reverse Tax Calculator directly.
Example 1: California (Combined State + Local Sales Tax)
Receipt total: $86.80, combined rate 8.68%
Pre-tax = $86.80 / 1.0868 = $79.88
Tax = $86.80 − $79.88 = $6.92
California’s base state rate is 7.25%, but most cities and counties add local district taxes on top, producing combined rates that vary block by block. Always use the specific combined rate shown on the receipt.
Example 2: Texas (State + Local Sales Tax)
Receipt total: $108.25, combined rate 8.25% (6.25% state + 2% local)
Pre-tax = $108.25 / 1.0825 = $100.00
Tax = $108.25 − $100.00 = $8.25
Example 3: Oregon (No Sales Tax)
Receipt total: $100.00, rate 0%
Pre-tax = $100.00 (no reverse calculation needed)
Tax = $0.00
Oregon, Montana, New Hampshire, Delaware, and Alaska have no state sales tax — the full amount paid is the pre-tax price.
Example 4: United Kingdom (Standard VAT)
Invoice total: £150.00, VAT 20%
Pre-tax = £150.00 / 1.20 = £125.00
VAT = £150.00 − £125.00 = £25.00
UK VAT is included in the displayed price for most consumer goods, so the £150.00 shown at checkout already contains the £25.00 VAT.
Example 5: Ontario, Canada (HST)
Receipt total: CAD $113.00, HST 13%
Pre-tax = $113.00 / 1.13 = $100.00
HST = $113.00 − $100.00 = $13.00
Ontario blends the 5% federal GST with an 8% provincial component into a single 13% Harmonized Sales Tax. See the Canada Revenue Agency’s GST/HST rate table for current rates by province.
Example 6: Quebec, Canada (GST + QST)
Receipt total: CAD $114.98, combined GST 5% + QST 9.975% ≈ effective 14.975%
Pre-tax = $114.98 / 1.14975 = $100.00
Tax = $114.98 − $100.00 = $14.98
Quebec applies GST and QST as separate line items, but because QST is calculated on the price alone (not GST-inclusive), the combined effective rate works out to approximately 14.975% for reverse-calculation purposes.
Example 7: Australia (GST)
Receipt total: AUD $110.00, GST 10%
Pre-tax = $110.00 / 1.10 = $100.00
GST = $110.00 − $100.00 = $10.00
Australian GST is exactly 1/11th of the GST-inclusive price — a shortcut equivalent to the standard formula: $110.00 × (1/11) = $10.00. Confirmed by the Australian Taxation Office’s GST guidance.
Example 8: Germany (VAT)
Invoice total: €119.00, VAT 19%
Pre-tax = €119.00 / 1.19 = €100.00
VAT = €119.00 − €100.00 = €19.00
